What began as a normal school day at the Portsmouth Secondary School this morning turned into chaos when students began screaming and running aimlessly.
Some of the students tried to get a glance of the action while others, in fear, just wanted to be out of the school’s compound.
It is alleged that three female students, each from forms two, three and four, started ‘acting up’ by turning over desks, fighting with teachers and turning their classes into rooms of confusion.
An alleged eyewitness saw one female student running down the main road to the school screaming. She was rescued by another young lady, and the two fell on top one another on the ground screaming. They then got up and continued down the street screaming as teachers and other students attempted to calm the two.
Another young lady who was being prayed for after violently attacking a teacher knelt calmly on the ground then suddenly attacked the teacher who was praying for her and other students close by. She also threw a chair at a male student.
Teachers were in panic at the sporadic violent outbursts of these students and one could note the fear and confusion on the faces of the students as some fled the scene in disbelief muttering “demonic possession”.
Most affected by this chaos were the fifth formers who are writing their pre-CXC exams.
A DNO correspondent is seeking to get comments from school officials and will report as soon as more information is obtained.

My view is this: I am a spiritual person, but I am not religious. Putting that out there in the open. As much as I think supernatural ideas are fun and wondrous and even terrifying, depending what they are, I don’t actually believe in them. Yes, this is my view, and you need not take it. But please give me a chance before responding. I do not believe that there are demons at work here, or that demons or spirits or any such thing exist. I put my trust in evidence, in facts. If demons, spirits, whatever, could be PROVED to exist, fine. But as it is now, I must remain skeptical.
There is no scientific evidence for supernatural things. The very word tells you that–it is “super” natural, i.e., not “natural.” Many things that we once thought were supernatural have been explained by science, and they are thus now “natural.” What people regard as “supernatural” is either 1) not explained as yet by science or 2) something that either cannot be proved at all or is just a belief someone has.
Let’s unpack that. A belief. What is a belief? A belief is the opposite of something known, right? What we “believe” is what we cannot prove. To “believe” in demons, thus, is to say that they are something we have not/cannot prove exists.
The key to proof is this: even if something cannot be disproved (like the existence of demons), that does not make it LIKELY to be true. It is not 50/50. Because there is no scientific evidence for demons, our inability to absolutely prove they do not exist does not mean they therefore DO exist. Let me add again that, if we could prove they DID, fine–they would become part of science. But until then, and I suspect that will never happen (though I cannot know for sure), we must remain skeptical.
One person below told me that just because I don’t believe something exists doesn’t mean it does not. Sure. But, as I said above, that does not mean that it DOES, either. Example: I don’t believe in invisible pink unicorns, but cannot prove they don’t exist (as they’re invisible). Does that make them real, just because I can’t DISPROVE them?
Now, I’m not here to attack people’s beliefs, per se. I don’t share the mythological aspects of them, but I do believe in the positive ethics (as opposed to the stonings, murders, etc.) of Jesus’ teachings. This does not make the rest of it real, however. Can I disprove it? No. Does that make it likely to be true, therefore? No. Does that make it UNtrue? Not necessarily. But what’s the probability of it being true?
I am not being arrogant. I’m open to being wrong. But I must follow evidence or I will let myself believe whatever I want to, and this is not healthy. Skepticism has a bit of a bad connotation, but it is a good, healthy thing to have a questioning, critical mind. And too many Dominicans I know reject this altogether. I’ve talked to some great locals, too, who teach me all kinds of things. But it is my conviction that unless we, as a people, in the island and in the diaspora, become more critical and questioning (regardless of what you end up following in life), we will not move forward. We must ask and must never blindly accept things we cannot even find real evidence for.
Some will then say, oh, those students defy science: so many affected at once! But why does this defy science? Give them blood tests and see if they test for drugs. Check their mental health. And, above all, find out if they are just jokers, people trying to get attention. Are they mad from CXC stress?
Don’t lose trust in evidence, and don’t jump to conclusions before that evidence is reached.

standing as a ‘helping nation’ as you so put does not mean that we cannot or should not report on what really went down. its that same attitude which keeps these incidents reoccurring. family or not we have to engage in discussion in order to put and end to these things. because of the stigma attached to this incident every one is afraid to speculate. well in a case like this speculation could actually work. it doesn’t make the school any less effective in the areas of sports or talent nor does it take away what has already been achieved. the truth of the matter is these things are real and needs to be addressed.
Too many of us speak about the things we do not have expertise in. For example, I heard the Pastor saying why it is not psychosis? How much does he know of this – that is not his field, so he should leave it for Dr Benjamin or Sharma. He may have done some normal psychology in theological school but not clinical psychology much less psychiatry. For example he said that the children “looked well”. What are the physical signs of psychosis. He also said they spoke ok. Is he aware that psychotic persons have moments of normalcy? If it was not psychosis, could it have been neurosis? Does he know the deigning characteristics?
In the same way, I do not expect the psychiatrists to say these are not spiritual in nature. As far as I know they have not studied enough of God’s work or have any anointing to allow them to speak of such things. Men of the clothe have there ways of knowing what are the signs and symptoms of demonic or other possession.
What I would like is the experts on these sides to educate those like me who are on the fence as to how they determined that the children manifested signs and symptoms of mental, physical or spiritual conditions.
Personally I am of the opinion that it is not the case of one or the other since humans are both temporal and spiritual.

The government must show more interest in the physical and spiritual wellbeing of the students and move to investigate these strange behaviors to provide help to the students and to let the nation know what is the real cause of the problem.

I believe this could be a case of a drug induce psychosis instead of an actual demon possession. The devil gets blame for a lot of things, but in this day and age with the introduction of drugs into our schools I am skeptical to give the credit to the devil for these incidents. Psychosis is functionally a break with reality, wherein the individual exhibits hallucinations and/or delusions. The individual’s objective grasp of reality is distorted. Even drugs like marijuana can lead to severe psychosis and present with symptoms such as: Anxiety or agitation, suspiciousness or paranoid ideation, impaired judgment, impaired attention, impaired reaction time, auditory, visual or tactile illusions, hallucinations, with preserved orientation, depersonalization, derealization and interference with personal functioning. So, before we blame it on demonic possession take a look at other possible causes for the adolescent behaviors. They are at an age where adolescents experiment with drugs and sometimes these drugs have so pretty negative consequences.

A few years ago I was informed of a similar going-on which occurred in a school in Trinidad.
It is shocking and unusual that such could occur in Dominica of all, a Christian nation. Something is radically wrong and something went wrong.
I do not want to place the blame on any particular person. However, it appears that children are not children as it were in those days when parents and children went to Church and practiced the faith. I never heard of children taking drugs and gangs among children then.
Children were children in those days and innocent ones who went to Church with their parents and who prayed.
Responsible parents as mine would not allow their children out at nights. If need be by no means without adult supervision. They protected us from evil elements.
Parents and teachers cooperated with each other and disciplined the children accordingly. Just recently I attended a social function and some of us Dominicans had a conversation about Dominican parents and teachers cooperation and their discipline in those days. No matter what Dominica was then a clean and innocent country so-to-speak. We were happier adults and children too. There is a price to pay for progress.
Today, with the influx of all sorts of different nationals with religious backgrounds and beliefs who are migrating to Dominica, Internet/computer exposure, IPODS, Blackberry, cellular phones which give children a certain degree of freedom to do, say and act as they please and reading certain non-religious and educating books no doubt, those who dabble in the occult, those who are superstitious, some parents and children who no longer go to Church and probably not pray, many living an ungodly lifestyle and following their own ways and more… what do you expect?
The hearts and minds of some of them are not on God who created us.
Then there are those who allow themselves to be indoctrinated falsely and blindly who renounced their Catholic Faith and joined other churches. This, in itself has contributed to lack of love, peace and unity.
There are some have renounced God and Christianity of all to join non-Christian religions. Sadly, too, these do not believe that Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Messiah, our Lord, King and Savior of the world and underestimating Our Almighty Father in many respects.
With all types of different opinions, religious and otherwise which do not accord love, peace and unity I reiterate, what do you expect. There is a price to pay and this is what is being experienced specifically in that school.
Children are the first to feel the brunt of this. They are young, gullible and not yet strong of faith and spirit. It is worst for those who do not practice the faith.
Those who state that a candle or such religious articles will not work but only get Satan angry, of course and who discourage others from utilizing what God has blest which will help us to ward off His enemy and the enemy of soul are totally wrong. Anyone who is trying to drive him out of their lives and homes will experience his anger but they must not give up for God is greater than His enemy.
I watched the Movies, Exorcist I and II and the Amityville Horror. I also saw this latter movie on TV and also read the book. The book was scarier than the movie that when I commenced reading it while commuting to and from work, I would not read it in my place of residence. I had spoken to a co-worker about that latter movie and she told me she had the book. I did not ask her for the book. She said that she will lend it to me. After I completed reading it I returned it to her. The enemy is strong much stronger than we could ever fathom. What he wants us to do is to give up. We must never allow this to happen. We must make all effort to drive him far away from us and from our general surroundings.
Please allow me to inform you what The Mother of God, The Ever Blessed Virgin Mary said to a visionary which is a message for us all God’s created children: “…He with his angelic power, God did not take it away from him…”
The day will come, Judgment Day when God will judge all nations and people, Satan and his corteges will be finally tied up and thrown into Hell, there to suffer for all eternity. In the meantime we have to contend with him annoying, scaring and tempting us. We have recourse to God in worship and prayer and to utilize the Sacraments and Sacramentals – Holy Water and blest religious articles. Let no one deter you from this.
Keep in mind, Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Fear not!” However, as human beings we are liable to fear.
Pertaining to candles, know that Satan is scared of fire which is what Hell is made up of. He will obviously act against it and become angry.
Satan knows more than everyone of us. He is a trickster – a deceiver, a detractor and destroyer of souls.
Holy Water: It is said that He cannot stand to be near anyone who is blest with Holy Water.
The Holy Rosary: I read in the book Secret of The Rosary that, “One Hail Mary makes all Hell tremble.” This is a good book to read. Many miracles have been wrought through praying the Holy Rosary which consists of the Life, Passion/Suffering, Crucifixion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, His Mysteries.
Meditating on these Mysteries will greatly assist us on earth and to obtain eternal salvation. These are also testimonies of Catholics.
Anyone who thinks otherwise and offers adverse advice and who scoffs at it is a heretic. They are definitely not on the side of Our Lord Jesus Christ as much as they think they are.
Keep in mind that the Mother of God bore The Word Incarnate, Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Allow your mortal and spiritual mind to think. Pray to God for this enlightenment and how Our Lady or Our Blessed Lady as Catholics as myself lovingly refer to Her is instrumental in assisting us in life and will ensure that we arrive at Heaven’s Gate.
It is stated that she is busy going about protecting Her Son’s Kingdom on earth. There are many stories about her apparitions and messages to the entire world. One of it is “Conform to the Will of God.”

If anyone thinks that their prayers are more powerful than Her whom Our Almighty Father honored to bear His Blessed Son, among all women, think again. Some years ago I received the inspiration: “God had a mission for Her in the world.” This mission is to pray for us and to assist us in the strife.
Our Lord died for us. He left us His directives, what to do to obtain eternal salvation. He does not pray for us. He already did this prior to His Passion when He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane that “We might be one.” Yet, we are not yet one, through disobedience, lack of love, peace and unity.
Our Lord gave us His Mother, A Heavenly Mother to pray and intercede for us. Mothers are good at that, helping us. Consider how she, a holy one, how effective her prayers are. It is worth contemplating on.
In The Secret of The Rosary, there is a chapter where Satan and his corteges have referred to her as: “That Mary! If you have one foot in the grave she will snatch you from the jaws of Hell” and stated how they hate her.
I love writing about her and her messages. The world needs to know about her and to honor her as Queen of Heaven and Earth – the latter, on and after Judgment Day.
Take God out of our home, our family, our heart, our schools this will what will occur. Interestingly, I recently heard on Catholic Radio, “God does not talk to those who do not (refuse to) talk to Him.”
These people are destroying themselves on earth and for all eternity.
When such things happen to children and in a school it is time to look up and turn to God.
Know the truth – of the matter.
God bless every one. I pray that He will assist those children. It is not an easy experience for them but rather a scary one. May this never happen again.

I am not saying that we should not be calling on God , prayer should be unending but we must also remember that we live in an age of scientific reasoning. I am a christian and believe in the power of good and evil, I also now that if we did not approach things scientifically we would be continuing to live in the dark ages (literally speaking).

Police and others in authority i urge you to carry out a full scientific investigation into the matter. If it is not too late even do blood test to check for the presence of foreign substances. The problem is when these things happen a scientific approached is never taken. The victims are never tested. The correct procedure is to take these young girls to the hospital for a blood test. If Dominica medical facilities do not have the capability for comprehensive blood testing then assistance should be sought from medical facilities in Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique or Puerto Rico. To often it is left to skepticism, rumors, guessing and other unprofessional diagnosis. The demonic talk is just pure rubbish and demonstrates the backwardness of some Dominicans.

If Dominica medical facilities do not have the capability for comprehensive blood testing then assistance should be sought from medical facilities in Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique or Puerto Rico. I cannot conclude from DNO that this was a demonic possession as I need stronger evidence in order to do so. However, I will say that our people are too emotional and lack any kind of faith. This is what happens when a society is too polytheistic and spiritually immature.
Demonic possession exists. It is a spiritual test and trial from the forces of darkness and evils. There are ways to prevent and treat demonic possession.
Our people sink lower by calling on the name of Jesus. Two thousand years ago in Palestine, no one knew anyone by the name ‘Jesus’ therefore those who believe that Jesus can save them, they are living in a mirage. I know the public will not agree with me but one cannot practice polytheism to cure demonic possession. People may say Jesus has worked for them, the reality is even people who call on satan, it works for them that’s why they continue to call on satan.
Another point is, demonic possession exists just as the flu exists. We do not see the microbes but we see and feel the effects of these microbes when it evolves into a flu. Similarly, people get possessed by demons, we do not see these demons however, we see the effects of the demons. Similarly, one has a weak flu it leaves them in little time; bad colds take a longer time to live. Thus, the same can be said about demonic possession; the stronger the demon, more effort is required to fight the demon.
Ways to curb demonic possession or influence in the society.
1. Our people must turn away from polytheism that has been imposed by the white European Christians during slavery.
2. One must call sincerely on the Most High alone without any mediaries or partners for protection against demonic forces.
3. People must remember Allah often. It cannot be done only when something goes wrong or want Allah’s help. Man too often forgets about Allah.
4. One has to seize from indulging in major sins. This leaves a gap for the devil.
There are many more things a person can do. There is no need for candles, incense, horseshoes, garde zaafai to keep away demons. Too much superstition in the land.

I remember I was a 7th grader at the Grand-Bay Government School and they said sweet Joe’s (the then principal) daughter said while she was in an empty classroom studying she heard noises and when she got up and look one creature I believe back then they said it was a hourse man started chasing her. As a secondary school teacher I know that there is no exams during the second term, so I don’t think exam stress is the cause. Secondly, the news item stated that the students were from 2nd, 3rd and 4th form. These students are not doing mock exam.

you all would ot belive i am in sxm and sunday i saw the same thing in a church on the french side where i visited. a young girl ask them to pray for her because she wanted to take her own ilfe, she is no more than 14 or 15. the pastor of the church and everyone was praying for her and belive me is not what anyone tell me, this girl really hard that thing in her. i think we all need to pray for our self, family, and the young people.

we got some real situation in dominica .evrey test my son is out of school…this is not only demon . the teachers them self have to clean them self. and have some justice and stop fustrating the children. for unnesesery things.
my son is out of school his only 15.he get bitup badly in school by some gang. went to the hospital we never get justice.
in this school have real problem and belive me the teachers cannot hadle it becous they working for money and not to educate our children in the right way.they just think they are somebody and the parents are nothing.7 boys hurt my boy and send him hospital.and they never get punish they still in school .now on a next test day a child told the teacher that he or she smell cigarrett in the toulett and maybe is my son that was smoking.up to now the teacher cannot show me the child who say so. .and my son is out of shcool.. this is dominica education.you see they dont try bild up children they brake them.sometime when you think your children in shcool they on the street. or in the school yard..when a child do somthing wrong the teacher send them out of school to be on the street .instaed of letting the children stay in school and do some extra lesson..do some extra work after schooll…may the lord protect our children and show our teachers the good way to educate our children..our teachers make our children what they are tomorrow. ..in dominica we lossing our kindness..

Many parents complain that they don’t know what to do again and they expect the teachers to play the roles of parents and teacher. And those are the children who disrupt the school, wastes everybody’s time and show the most ill discipline.
When the parents do what they have to do, then school will mean more to their children
