Peters said Dominica leads in career education

President of the Dominica State College (DSC), Dr. Donald Peters, says Dominica is taking a leadership role in the region in terms of career technical education.

He said this while addressing a contract signing ceremony for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and Innovation held at the DSC on Monday.

“Dominica is taking the leadership because we are a very progressive institution in creating partnerships with the world and on things that we call career technical education,” Dr. Peters stated. “We want our students to come here and when they leave their can walk into a job in any country, not only in Dominica.”

He noted that “our education must be global and it must be equal to anywhere in the world” and according to him, although the the DSC is only 13 years old, it is way ahead of its counterparts in the OECS.

He stated further the DSC is doing everything in its power to ensure that, “when we produce graduates from this college that they are equipped to help our country develop.”

Meanwhile Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Marcella Powell said education is the key to both the alleviating of poverty and the economic and social advancement of the citizens of Dominica.

“It is my hope that the Centre of Excellence and Innovation will indeed further develop our people intellectually, vocationally, technologically and entrepreneurially,” she said.

Powell stated also that the establishment of the centre of learning is a clear indication of the progressive vision of government in investing in its human resource capital.

“The centre of Excellence and Innovation is yet another avenue to expand and enhance our educational prowess for the betterment of ourselves, community, country, region and our world,” she said. “We must begin to see ourselves as creators, entrepreneurs, innovators, developers and masers of our own destiny as we educate ourselves in a twenty-first century world with its complexities, challenges and opportunities.”

Only in Dominica I see people with PhDs speak so easily with no data and no statistics to back up their arguments and yet this is what should differentiate these research professionals from the lay person. Anybody could make this statement with no evidence to back it up but you Sir are not anybody! You are a research scholar and President of a Higher Education facility. Come on, please do better than that. Where is the data? “Dominica is taking the leadership because we are a very progressive institution in creating partnerships with the world and on things that we call career technical education.” That’s it, Doc? You are a disgrace to your PhD, you know that? You are laughable.

How many Dominicans canclaim that they have actually done something for Dominica besides themselves. Not much and I am assuming none of you posting comments here. I know for a fact Dr.P has done a lot for Dominicans here and abroad and is still continuing to do so.
Someone ask that he provide some form of data for making such a statement. What type of data would you like? Obviously he is making such a statement because as an educator in the caribbean region he is aware of whats going on his field like any interested educated individual would do and would be the best resources to let us know what is being made available in other countries in comparism to Dominica.
People need to stop being lazy and go find out the information you seek for yourself. Its that same mentality we have that makes us think the Government has to do everything for us and yet we give nothing in return.

Is that so when Dominica is not even a member of CANTA like its other Caribbean neighbours. What about a National Training Agency? like St Lucia and the others. What about the TVET Council? We have none of these in place and you talk about leading in technical field . Please what a joke?
CANTA is an association of national training agencies and other TVET apex bodies in CARICOM states established in 2003. The founding members are Barbados TVET Council, Jamaica Heart Trust National Training Agency and Trinidad and Tobago National Training Agency. CANTA is endorsed as the implementation arm of the CARICOM Regional Coordinating Mechanism (RCM) for TVET. Could you tell me Mr Peters what is Dominica’s status regarding CVQ-Caribbean Vocational Qualification

Donald the news is welcoming ” Dominica Lead in technical Education ” but how do we know this a credible information. Therefore please provide supporting data for your claim or a link where we can access the information and read for yourself.

Educators has always said you need to ready for yourself.

My question is if we are leading in technical education why don’t we have any major INTL technology or software companies operating and employing these technical student in Dominica?

Devry University a major technical school in the USA which owns Ross University……why are we not forging a relationship with them to help open door for technology companies to do business in DA and better arm our student for opportunities in the technical field globally

Ok, great, when we produce all these qualified individuals where are they going to find work.

Mr Peters, why does UWI not recognize graduates from our college. We are giving people Associates Degree and they can hardly speak or write English. We have no vetting system to determine who enters college and nearly everyone graduates. Garcon mi cosionnie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You see, that is why many Dominicans like to claim Dominica is leader in this and that, ad we were awarded all kind of things for our efficiency’s, which boils down to nothing! And So Donald I suggest you state career training in what. Because career “a Course Passage” as well as a field for, or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement.

A career is considered a profession for which one trains and is undertaken permanent calling. So I ask that you describe the different type of career training you are offering from your institution which is not an accredited institution. To gain accreditation, you have to be associated with an accredited University somewhere on the planet, and you have to teach basically what you teach has to be from some curriculum recognized by that University; right now no matter what you teach it only has value in Dominica.

“Because career “a Course Passage” ”

Sorry, I meant to say “because career can be defined as “a Course passage.”

” Dominica is taking a leadership role in the region in terms of career technical education.”
I don’t usually take time to listen to or read what this gentleman has to say because quite frankly, who knows how to use his vocal cords to sing for his supper. However, if there is any truth from the above statement, Donald Peters should also state that Dominica also leads in career technical educated young men and women that CANNOT find work to do and therefore their traing is almost useless.

I am glad we are re-establishing vocational training in Dominica but to claim that we are already the leaders is a bit crass without providing comparative data. Pls. Doctor, whom are you comparing us with? Names and figures please.
