Registrar of the Dominica State College, Denise Edwards is in the Colombian capital, Bogota attending the Second Regional Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction in Higher Education for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The forum which began on Monday, Nov. 24 and will run until Wednesday, Nov. 26, brings together Educators from Universities and Colleges from Latin America, North America and the Caribbean.

An estimated 160 participants from 20 countries are attending the forum, including members of REDULAC national chapters, the United States and regional university authorities, national emergency system representatives, and international organizations such as the Red Cross.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) experts and university professors are presenting on research experiences and lessons learned during the incorporation of DRR into higher education institutions and study plans, including careers, social action, educational outreach, and community DRR activities.

Group discussions will follow daily panels involving subject experts, allowing participants to explore specific disaster management and risk reduction themes in greater depth and form communities of practice within the university networks.

The Dominican participant was nominated by Former National Disaster Coordinator Cecil Shillingford and her participation is being sponsored by the United States Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance of the US Agency for International Development USAID/OFDA.

Recognizing the important role higher education institutions play in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery in Latin America and Caribbean, USAID/OFDA and the U.N. International Strategy for Disaster Reduction are sponsoring the Forum which was organized by the Latin American and Caribbean University Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (REDULAC).

The first forum was held in Panama City, Panama, in August 2012 and the next forum will be held in 2016.
