The Dominica State College (DSC) recently set a new record when all 40 of its students who took the DSC administered June 2013 City and Guilds International Examinations, passed.
According to a statement from the DSC, this is first time that all students registered for the exam passed. There was also a significant number of high passes; 7 distinctions, 18 merits and 10 credits.
Delon Valerie, Dannell Alexis, Joseph Francis, Ethan Laroque, Dave Laurent, Eustace St.Rose and Joel Bedminister were the top performers in the IVQ Diploma in Electrical Installation.
Heading the performance list in the IVQ Technician Certificate in Motor Vehicle were Henderson Bruney, Conrad Marvin Phillip and Luis Johnson.
Twenty-one (21) of the students writing the Electrical Installation exam were working adult learners who were given a special two-semester accelerated programme by the DSC’s Department of Continuing Education (DCE) in preparation for the examination. The adult learners gained 4 distinctions, 11 merits and 6 passes.
Dean of Education at the Dominica State College, Merrill Matthew, notes that “The performance of the working adult learners is particularly encouraging, for it opens up a new door at DSC for uncertified trade persons to receive international qualifications.”
Recognising the work of lecturers Joseph Matthew and Reynold Bunche in the results, Dean Rawle Leslie says, “These results endorse the quality of education and training that DSC lecturers provide and strengthens DSC’s resolve to be the leading tertiary education institution in Dominica, recognised for its high quality programmes, the competence of its faculty, and its responsiveness to the educational and training needs of the country.”
City and Guilds International is one of the leading vocational education providers globally. Every year two million learners across 81 countries work towards 500 qualifications in every major industrial sector.
Having offered international awards for over 100 years, City and Guilds has earned the reputation for working closely with industry leaders, governments, employers and educational partners to develop relevant qualifications.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to visit this sight, Most of the comments posted are worthy of reading but majority are just dishing out bull crap.
Why can’t we all just congratulate these students, be proud, be happy and wish them a long and productive future?
Come on..My people!!!
Congratulations to all 40 students and their lecturers. Special mention to Dave Laurent, your hard work paid off, we are so proud of you!
Congratulations to my boy Joel Bedminister. You have made Portsmouth proud. All the best to you in your future endeavors. You have made us all proud. Keep on doing your best. Hard work pays off

congrats to all students especially Delon Valerie aunty proud boy.
Congratulations! You’ve made Dominica proud!
Special recognition to my cousin Joseph Francis. I’m so proud of you.
Great job guys for a job well done. Congrats!
Now, the next step is to turn the credentials into apprenticeships and sustainable jobs. Still, it would be nice if these young people could organize themselves into small businesses where they can make more effective use of that training and talent.
The point is not about howmany passed but there were no FAILURES. Otherwise ,a 100% success was accquired in 2013
, whereas in the other case 93% passed the exams. Congrats to all, especially Ethan Larocque of Colulibistrie.
Paper is just one step, lets just hope that in the real world they have the desire to work ethically and not delude and play all kind of gimmicks with their clients. Remember Don’t over charge your clients and still give them shoddy work.
Congrats to my boy con !
Now that is something to scream about! congratulations mucho, mucho to all. Hard work truly pays off.
CONGRATS DAVE, WE ARE PROUD OF YOU
I want to ask the administration why did they take our Refrigeration and Air conditioning from City and Guilds examination. We did well in this exam now that ones that are doing the exam only gets a certificate.
Congrats to all! Makes me feel like coming back for a refresher course.
Congrats Mr Bedminister.
Continue the good work and prove that you have quality services to offer rather than otherwise.
i told you, you can and will make it. you make me proud.
Nice!!
congratulations to my boys conrad and luis!!
CONGRATULATIONS to the students, tutors and admin leadership of the DSC!
This is great great news. CONGRATS to all students and lecturers. I am very proud!
hold on that still isnt a record as yet cause im sure in 2001 the electrical engineering class ( 20 plus) the mechanical engineering class ( 20 plus ) the design drafting class ( 20 plus ) and the motor vehicle engineering class ( 15 plus ) upwards of 75 students sat City and Guilds examinations exams with only 5 failures so that 70 passed with my class the electrical engineering having 9 distinctions in it not to mention the distinctions in the other 3 courses mentioned as well as credits and merits so i doh know if im wrong in 2001 we got a whole lot more high scoring students than they did in 2013 so i guess last time i checked that shows that standards at the college have dropped ? or does the distinction on my city and guilds certificate say otherwise and thats not counting the 1999 class and the 1997 class who did a whole lot better than my graduating year so how is 40 measly students passing a new record there?
apparently the record is All Passed…. N.B you said your class had 5 failures.. this class didn’t… 40 taking the exams isn’t the fault of the college… cost of tuition may cause others to not take it on… nonetheless who sits the exams can’t be controlled by the college.. fact is all passed. that is the record…
Exactly !!! I was just about to post that same thing. I am VERY confused and VERY uncomfortable with the fact that these small numbers get recognition whereas the graduates of 99-2001 didn’t.
I have seen the results of one student and he only got one paper showing one result. Whereas when we did it, we got SIX ! papers. 3 Certificates and 3 Diplomas. We did everything including practicals for these exams. THEY DID NOT.
Congratulation to all 40 successful students. Well done! Acknowledgement to the lecturers for their hard work too. Thanks to those previous students who provided living examples to other students to follow. Now to the reply: The record is that ALL 40 of the students who took the City and Guilds examination passed ergo how then could one – based on 40 students taking an exam and all 40 passing – conceive of the thought that the college standard is dropping? Apropos maybe we should consider:- Could this mean that fewer students are attending college and/or fewer are sitting the exams. Could it be that the scarcity of money could be lowering attendance records? Could it be due to almost nil employment opportunities students who excel in secondary schools are losing interest towards further education? Read, read, read. Listen, listen, listen. Be slow to speak. Born with one mouth but two eyes and two ears, consequently we need to use the mouth less and eyes and ears more. There are more questions to ponder upon as to why only 40 students took the exams but I will wait, listen and see what others may have to say. Meanwhile, I give congratulations to those 40 students and their lecturers. Well done DSC.
waypapa just congratulate the young men
I am going to make this simple so YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS A RECORD……… 40 students out of 40 students = 100% pass; 70 students out of 75 students = 93.3%………. I do hope that YOU (and your fellow mates) SEE the difference as per PERCENTAGES than NUMBERS
You see that, you just said it 75 sat 70 passes. English is still a foreign language to us. 40/40 was and still is a higher percentage than 70/75. In my penny hapney knowledge, DSC is right. This year was the best, stop hating
