Dominican receives prestigious Cambridge scholarship

Jerelle Joseph will begin her studies at Cambridge in October
Jerelle Joseph will begin her studies at Cambridge in October

A Dominican studying at the University of the West Indies, Jerelle Joseph, has been selected to study at the University of Cambridge under the Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program.

She earns the distinction of being the first Dominican to have ever been selected for the program initiated by Microsoft founder, Bill Gates.

She is among 55 students from around the globe described as the “world’s most academically brilliant and socially committed young people” to be selected for the program

Joseph will begin her post graduate studies at Cambridge in October where she will pursue a PhD in Chemistry which will focus on the use of “atomistic modelling to investigate variable pathogens such as influenza and HIV.”

According to the University of Cambridge, rapid mutations of these viruses pose a huge problem for vaccination.

Joseph’s research will aim “to predict the structures of these pathogens, to link this to their antigenic properties and eventually to apply this to the development of viable vaccines for these viruses.”

Being named a Gates Cambridge scholar is by no means an easy feat and competition is fierce.

Scholars are chosen based on their intellectual ability, leadership capacity, academic fit with Cambridge, and their commitment to improving the lives of others.

Some 3,647 students from around the world applied for scholarships but only 55, including Joseph, were chosen.

Joseph is from the community of Vielle Case and attended the Portsmouth Secondary School.

She graduated from the University of the West Indies with first class honors with a BSc. in Chemistry and Mathematics in 2012. She is currently completing an MPhil in Chemistry at UWI. Over the last two years, the focus of her research has been on an unusual intermolecular interaction called ‘halogen bonding.’

In a profile posted on the Unversity of Cambridge’s website, Joseph said she is a “firm believer that everyone has the ability to be great at something.”

“You just need to find one thing that you are passionate about and pursue it relentlessly,” she stated.

Her dream is to become a professor of computational chemistry and to lead her own research group in the Caribbean.

“I hope to raise the standard of scientific research in my region and to inspire others to do the same,” she stated.

Ellie your continued success in life is because of your humility. The people who comment here would not believe how humble a young woman you are. You can paint the house and do anything that needs to be done. You will continue to make it big in life. Your parents are indeed proud of you eventhough they are not in flesh to celebrate with you. Vieille Case celebrates your achievement and wish you all God’s blessings and success. We are proud of you Ellie….Keeping making it big and remain humble.

Jerelle darling i will give you my house, my land my car and my whole paycheck….well my father doe let go d land for me yet but baby is still yours

      • April 9, 2014

I think you should educate yourself first. Allow Jerelle to continue her education before you extend that proposal. You, apparently, have NOTHING to offer, so far. You are still a DEPENDENT waiting for daddy to “let go of the land”.

Hello, although I do not know who you are, I must say, you are not ready to be anyone’s husband if you think an INTELLIGENT LADY such as Jerelle would give up pursuing her DREAM for your “house, land, car and paycheck”. If you are really serious you will WAIT while she continues her education.

I believe that Jerelle is an INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUAL, if she should marry you, she would like to CONTROL HER OWN INCOME. No need to say more. VIEILLE CASE.

      • wayvee
        April 9, 2014

@Well I am presently educating myself. Land is very important but it is not all, and will come soon. You are wrong – I am ready for marriage and i would never ask her to give up her dream – I would prefer us to live our dreams together. I’m all for independence but i prefer words like “our” and “we” rather than “her own” and “my own”. But hey thanks for the advice anyway

I hope she has her head on, to study and not get involved until she completes her study. Otherwise it could be a hindrance to her continuing education and graduation. Let her study and complete it first. OK!

Congratulations Jerell and best wishes throughout your studies at Cambrige.

I agree with you 100% in believing that everyone has the ability to be great at something. We just need to find one thing we are passionate about and pursue it relentlessly. In other words, God gave everyone of us a talent. Some of us see it right away, others have to look deep.

The majority of us start out in businesses and careers that were the first to present an opportunity for us and end up forgetting about our passions. And we work hard at it every day and never achieve self actualization because it is not our true calling.

If you love accounting and you are good at it stop fighting to be a good farmer. Make the necessary sacrifices to become an accountant. Then and only then you will be truly happy.

And it could take years to know and to pursue it. It depends on the circumstances. While life lasts, it is never too late and by no means in the progressive countries where the opportunities are many.

Oh, stop bragging! Every town and village in Dominica have talented people who have excelled to a certain degree. There are nationals with brains throughout Dominica.
Those who appear not to have any, it is because they did not apply themselves. If they did, they would be surprised how intelligent they are. They only have to try.
Others who have brains were not fortunate to get the opportunity to prove themselves.

I am elated and proud of this beautiful young lady. With this elated feeling comes some sadness though as I confront the reality that this is another great mind and potential that is sure to take this tremendous talent elsewhere; most likely to the industrialized countries.
I am saddened that our region just cant provide the means to keep such talent and profession.
So let me say to the young lady go make us proud.i am confident that you will carry our flag as you head for the mountain top.All the best to you young lady

      April 9, 2014

      You are such a pessimist!

Why do fellow Dominicans find it difficult to applaud and celebrate the achievements of our people, without throwing in some negative predictions?

Young lady congratulations to you. The Lord will help you to make the correct future choices.

I hope you get to meet the fellow Dominican who is a professor at Cambridge university. Her family is from Soufriere, St Mark!

      • April 9, 2014

I do no agree with you when you say this person is a pessimist. He/she is a realist and says it like it it. He/she is indeed applauding the achievements of the young lady, so don’t try to downplay what was said.

      • greg
        April 9, 2014

Really is that what you got from my blog? I can only assume that you misunderstand the word pessimist.

      • Simply the Truth
        April 10, 2014

I am no pessimist. We have different views on this matter and this is greg’s view as he stated which is a reality. For now she has visions of returning to the Caribbean, to Dominica. Consider she will be commencing at Cambridge in October. During her studies and upon graduation, she may meet with some counterparts and during courses of conversation there is a possibility she may have a change of heart.
Many have gone abroad to study and did not return to work in D/ca. I have known a few who returned only to repay the government and then left for abroad where a job was waiting.
Some have worked to fulfill their obligation to the government that loaned them money for their studies and then returned abroad to work.
Some have worked for some years and then in their latter years of retirement returned. Others never returned.
Consider also money, a substantial salary could tempt them and deter them from returning. Marriage is another one. These are the factors which could keep them overseas. I expect she does not have to repay Bill Gates. Therefore, she could choose to remain abroad or to return to Dominica. Let us wish her well.

    • April 9, 2014

@greg, did you not read that this beautiful young lady’s intentions are to open her own business back home? However, if there are no open doors on her Island of birth she may have no choice but to “take this tremendous talent elsewhere”. Who would blame her? One do not waste their time and energy for nothing.

I think that it is PAST TIME for “our region to provide the means to keep such talent and profession” within our community. Yes, “make us proud”. We are confident that she will carry our flag as she head for the mountain top. Yess, “All the best to you young lady.”

As a parent, I love to see when young people excel in their studies and have goals set. I don’t know you, but I pray that God will continue to guide you (and by extension your family and support group). Best of luck in your endeavors.
