Dominican student graduates top of class in St. Thomas

Commodore has received scholarship offers from several universities
Commodore has received scholarship offers from several universities

On The evening of June 14 2014, Nirisha Commodore, originally from Tete Morne, graduated from the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School on St. Thomas with an overall average of 98.

She earned the distinction of being the number one student out of the 186 who graduated.

She received a partial scholarship from the University of the Virgin Islands earlier this year and recently received a full four-year scholarship to that same University with all expenses paid.

Commodore has also received scholarship offers from Rider University, Ohio Wesleyan University and Stetson University.

Commodore was not able to be given the title of Valedictorian at the graduation since the law in the Virgin Island states that a student has to begin high school in there in order to gain the title, whether or not the student is deserving.

Before migrating to St.Thomas, Commodore was a student of the Dominica Grammar School. She left after completing her first term in third form.

Commodore was recognized at the ceremony as top honor student and number one among her entire class.

She also received the student of the year award and scholarships from the Board of a Education of the Virgin Islands, Alpha Kappa Sorority and ROTC to name a few. She took two advance placement classes (AP Classes); Psychology and English where she excelled in every one of them.

A member of the honors society, she scored 1,830 on her SAT exam, was the winner of Laws of Life Essay and President of both national society and aspiring youth group.

Commodore is heading towards a career in oncology.

She is the first child of former pastor of the Portsmouth Gospel Mission church; Nigel Commodore and Naomi Commodore.

The parents are originally from Tete Morne.

Just saw this .I am reminded of the successes of other Domincan students who over the years have excelled at UVI where domincans have a great student reputation !
For some years DA students consistently topped at UVI including back in 2008 Athalia Edwards daughter of Mickey Edwards a car spray painter from Fond cole and Joanne Seraphin daughter of O.J former PM ,who as summa cum laude toped the honours then .
Interestingly they have gone on to become successes in their mid twenties with Athalia becoming a Manager of Marketing of a major US tobacco Company and Joanne now an MBA becoming a Manager of the world famous Ritz Carlton Hotel chain.
    Dominicans do excel with opportunity

congrats my girl. but it seems like one set that makes DNO news, i wonder why. what about the students in Cuba, Venezuela are they not as important too?

    • smh
      June 19, 2014

she is there because her information was sent. If you have news on students from elsewhere, send it. DNO doesn’t go looking for students who excel abroad to post their stories. The information is sent to them..so send yours

Sorry Dominica. Those who can leave should leave. Well done young lady. Congratulations. You emulate a scholarly Dominican. Many of us do greater after we leave. Seriously, sometimes the environment can be suffocating for some people. I am a testament to that.

We who reside abroad and especially read some comments on DNO fully understand what the person meant. While some probably would give thumbs down, I would not.
At the same time, there are times we wished we had never left home and wished we were there. Everywhere has its advantages and disadvantages. There could be good times and bad times. Experience is a good teacher.
Dominica has warm weather all year round. Those of us residing in a cold climate have nine months of winter. This past winter was not a good one at all.
We are now experiencing a few warm days but who knows? We have hardly seen the sun this week. Today is cloudy. Yesterday was rainy and stormy at intervals. There was a rain/thunderstorm with lightning in certain parts of the city. Thousands of people were left without electricity; some of them are still without it. Some trees fell and downed the lines.
In an area in Ontario, there was a tornado which destroyed some homes. This is a brief rundown of what we experience. As summer progresses and it gets hotter, we expect more. May God help us :)

This isn’t regular news. Wouldn’t you want to be recognized if you did as well as she did? Is it everyone who graduates from high school you see getting what she got?

Some of you people are just jealous and poisonous. My gosh! Just congratulate the girl and keep moving or push your hands in your pocket

  16. June 17, 2014

Congratulation to this young lady and may the lord bless and keep you through your life. Gods blessings.

D.N.O. Why do you keep printing the word ORIGINAL in saying where she and her parents are from? this is a typical thing for Dominican,s to say which do not make any sense. if she is ORIGINALY from tete morne? where is she from now???. she is still from tete morne, no matter where she is or what she has mastered in life/school. I think Dominican should keep the word ORIGINAL out when introducing someone.

great job young lady. keep making your self/parents and country proud. keep focus. be blessed.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Congratulations young lady and I hope you have a bright future. I see that the University of the Virgin Islands gave you a four year scholarships but remember they aren’t a highly regarded college therefore I think you should accept the partial scholarship and come to the main land where you will receive a better education. Our people usually excel if we put our mind to it. Congrats again.

Before you make such claims, you should do some research.

        Facts VS Opinion .

Hello and good evening my people. Well we can check a 2013 article in the VI Daily News. Also in 2012 they were credited in thirteen majors where they can now offer a four year Bachelor Degree. The UVI is basically a Two Year college and is associated with The City University of New York strictly with their Associate Degree Program. It’s always good to see our people excel and am proud of the young lady.

please don’t take the young lady’s glory Dominica. just because she is from Dominica doesn’t give it the right to claim glory on her behalf. She worked hard and deserve all that she has gotten and more. the amazing fact is that she doesn’t have to have a specific surname to get her where she is heading. To God be the Glory.

    • Bad DA
      June 17, 2014

nobody is taking her glory smh. she is a Dominican and we a simply letting her know how proud we are of her accomplishments and wishing her well in the future. How can she get glory if nobody gives it to her especially people from her country.

Her beginning as a student was at the Dominica Grammar School. Her teachers/professors must have taught her well.
You must learn that nothing is achieved by solely ourselves. Someone or some people were responsible for assisting us and guiding us to achieve what we have and aspired to.
Too many take the compliments/honor for themselves saying, “I did it. No one helped me” as if they were born that way. There is a development stage from the moment we are born. Therefore, as some do, they give due honor and praise to their parents, teachers and others who encouraged them and assisted them. I am certain that she will do just that.
Nevertheless, she deserves compliments and the honor for she cooperated with them and also studied very hard, was diligent to have achieved so much as a young student. Let us wish her well for the future.

I believe the grades in Dominica and expectations are higher. Dominica may still be operating under the British school/university system.
In the US as Canada it is not as high. Students stand a better chance of graduating with a certain percentage. Many do. I was surprised at the requirement to graduate unlike in Dominica or the West Indies for that matter.
