Dominican student, Kael London, and his colleague, Valdere Murphy, of the Bahamas, have made it to the finals in recently concluded prestigious 20th Washington College of Law (WCL) Inter-American Court of Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Washington D.C.
The two are second-year law students of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
The team placed third out of 100 teams from around the world that took part in the competition.
Team Cave Hill, led by coach, Westmin R.A. James LL.M.(Cantab.) from the Faculty of Law at Cave Hill, also had the second highest score in the semi finals.
Both members of Team Cave Hill also placed among the top 25 of the 200 oralists in the Competition.
Mooting is the art of arguing Law before a panel of up to seven Judges and presenting a case based on a fact pattern (often times real-life scenarios). At the same time the judges ask questions, very similar to representation in the Court of Appeal.
This year, the competition dealt with transitional justice and Team Cave Hill appeared for the State; a notoriously difficult position.
Team Cave Hill for the past three years has placed in the top three teams in the competition.
The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus team also made the semi finals and placed seventh overall. The institution’s Mona Campus, which took part in the competition for the first time, placed 21. Team Mona was awarded the Prize for Best Oralist in English for the Petitioner and Best New Team.
According to the Washington College of Law’s website, the moot competition “was established to train attorneys on how to use the Inter-American human rights legal system as a legitimate forum for redressing human rights violations. The Competition requires students to argue the merits of a hypothetical case written on a cutting-edge topic currently being debated within the Inter-American human rights legal system. All student team members must be enrolled in a Juris Doctor (JD) degree program or its international equivalent to participate as a team.”
