DSC welcomes close to 800 new students

Close to 800 new students will take part in the Dominica State College (DSC) Orientation Week from Monday, August 29 to Friday, September 2.

The Theme for this year’s orientation week is “Are you Prepared?” This theme is very important as it focuses not only on the Freshmen being prepared for the challenges of college life but great emphasis is also placed on their preparedness for the challenges they will face in the hostile global environment.

The special Orientation Week is geared to preparing students mentally, socially and spiritually for the high quality learning experience they will encounter at the DSC starting September, 2011.

Events begin on Monday August 29, 2011 at 9:30 am with a formal opening ceremony at the St. Alphonsus Parish Hall. Highlights of this ceremony will be a feature address by the Honourable Minister of Education, Honourable Petter St. Jean and the Charge to the students by the President of the Dominica State College, Dr. Donald. C. Peters.

Day Two and Three (Tuesday, August 30, 2011 & Wednesday, August 31, 2011) is set aside for registration and advising of the new students.

Day Four (Thursday September 1, 2011) is Parents Day. Our statistics have shown that the majority of new students entering the Dominica State College (DSC) are high school graduates, between the ages of sixteen (16) and twenty (20) years old, most of whom are still under parental control. Therefore, the parent is an important constituent to the DSC and this explains why this year we have set aside a day for parents dubbed “Parents’ Day”. This activity is carded for at the DSC Stockfarm Campus, between the hours of 9am and 1pm. This will create an opportunity for the parents to interact with the Faculty and Management of the Dominica State College. Parents will be provided with the opportunity to know the college better and to express their concerns and expectations.

Day Five (Friday, September 5, 2011) will be the freshman’s Seminar, in which highly experienced and knowledgeable facilitators from within and without the DSC will lead interactive sessions to engage the new students in thinking of positive approaches to optimize their time at this new level.

I think is is great news that we have so many YOUNG people interested in and can afford college (no matter how little or large the amount may be argued). Plus, I strongly believe that there are other youths that are interested in furthering their education, regardless of the state of the property, but are just not able to afford the cost. My concern is however, what are they going to do at the end of their time in college? If there are no new jobs and the young people dont have incentives and support to start their own businesses. What shall they do at the end?-

I think it’s commendable that DSC even exists. Rome was not built in a day. Yes things must improve, so both staff and students must play their part. Alot of times the improvement does not cost money… just the expenditure of improving our attitudes, giving respect to each other and serving our countrymen.

It has been said that “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” and many students are counting on the DSC to further their studies. The DSC is what their parents can afford or where they are able to get a scholarship.

If the quality of education there is below acceptable standard, then this should be addressed immediately otherwise, the certificate obtained will mean nothing when the students are trying to get a job or pursue even higher education.

Many parents are happy and relieved that there is a college in Dominica that their son or daughter can attend without the financial stress of sending them overseas.

Those responsible for making the dreams of these parents and students a reality should not sleep in that pursuit.

People that never leave Dominica always the first to open their ignorant mouth and talk you know. For the few years that the DSC has been operating it is good. You can’t not expect hickups.
I spend 4 hours at UWI campus Cave Hill just to pay tuition fees. what do you all know.
I spent my 2 years at DSC and I never had any problems. I did not chose my courses based on friends, I went to all my classes…you do your share.
AND BE THANKFUL SO MANY DOMINICANS WHO WOULD NOT HAVE EVER GOTTEN INTO COLLEGE A CHANCE TO MAKE SOMETHING OF THEMSELVES ARE GETTING THAT CHANCE WITH THE DSC…PRAISE GOD FOR THAT!!!

that college should ask themselves that question first b4 taking in 800 ppl. are they prepared? after going to tht school for several years, they have proven time and time again that there is a lack of preparedness. losing ppl grades and crap like that. i think they need to prepare more than those poor, unfortunate students!!!

The Dominica State College needs a lot of work. The Dominica State College needs to be built and structured into Dominica State UNIVERSITY up to Doctorate level in diverse fields so that money can circulate here and more jobs.

Up till now their website is down, this is unbecoming.

I know what you mean, but the people in the head right now don’t think big like that. The way I see that place there I don’t even want to tell other people about it. it’s an eye saw and to be inviting guest into that place is an embarrassment.

It’s sad. They want to be high and wrong!

This Place Does not care for the students but for what the students have in their Pockets! I’ve had a bad experience with these people and I think i’m scared for LIFE! Now I Know how they really are! :-x

It helps to educate yourself before making rather foot in mouth comments.College charges next to nothing to educate people. Colleges in the states charge around 20,000 US a year vs not even 2000 EC a year. And believe me they aren’t educating very well either. The top smart students suffer as a result. So my advice is to segment the college and let the bright ones do difficult programs and the others the way college currently is.

Some of us need to do some research and check the price of Education compared to what is paid at the DSC.

Yes, the DSC needs some work, and there is much room for improvement, but some of the very problems the students at DSC experience, students in schools like Yale and all those Ivy League schools with all the money and resources experience the same issues even after over 100 years in existence. The College is only nine years old, it needs time and support from it’s people to develop. No one talks about the many successes and good experiences, all we do is criticize.
