Big Edge Financial’s managing director, Antonilia Doctrove, presents check to Jeanne Seraphin

An 11-year-old of Bath Estate has been urged to “keep the midnight oil burning” in both her academic and sports life, as she took the 2013 Billy Doctrove Sports Scholarship.

Jeanne Seraphin, who is a young emerging netballer, has been making a name for herself in the sport.

Former Cricket Umpire and co-owner of Big Edge Financing, Billy Doctrove, told the recipient, that she must strive in both departments and that she should pattern herself after last year’s scholarship recipient Tahj Tavernier.

“Last year it was Tahj and we understand that he is doing extremely well in SMA both in his academics and in sports … he scored a century in St. Lucia  just last week when he was representing Dominica in an under 13 tournament,” he said. “So we are indeed very, very proud of him and we hope that Jeanne can take a leaf out of his book and do as well.

Doctrove said that he understood that she is an ‘exceptional netballer’ and that she should “…continue to perform well on the netball field and also to do her academics.”

He also mentioned that his company is the first to provide a scholarship for sports, and believes that sports is a fundamental aspect of one’s holistic development.

“We are the first company to have provided a sports scholarship to a young person to enter secondary school,” he noted. “We believe that Sports in an integral part of a person’s total development, and we believe that the sports and academics can go hand in hand. So we want to encourage the young persons in primary schools out there to take the sports seriously so that they possibly can benefit from that scholarship.”

Seraphin was one of the top performers in this year’s national assessment exams. She represented Dominica at the just concluded regional 13 and under netball festival in the B-team, which was captained by her sister. The team defeated the three regional countries and emerged as the second place in the tournament.

Seraphin said she was happy she received the scholarship and vowed to do well.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Big Edge Company for giving me this scholarship, I promise to make good use of this opportunity …I am so happy to be associated with people like you Mr. Doctrove and I pray that your company excel,” she said.

Her mother also promised to assist her  in her school work.

The scholarship is worth $1,000.

Tahj Tavernier also received $1,000 for the second year.

Another $1,000 was given to the Children’s Heart Fund spearheaded by Dr. Rhonda Mc Intyre and received By Jennifer Fadelle.

They all promised to that the assistance will go a long way.

Billy is a true Dominican and will always be.

I’m happy to hear that good customer service is provided because we the Dominicans in the UK have a big problem with that aspect in Dominica.

We sure criticize the Banks and other public places for their lack of customer skills.

I have always known Billy to have a very caring heart and he continues to demonstrate that through his business. Big edge is a new business but they have done so much in such a short time to help less fortunate people. They are a credit to the Dominican private sector and it is a pity that Billy has turned down the opportunity of joining the political race as he would have been an excellent Parl Rep
