Four students get DOMLEC scholarships

Four students have received scholarships from electricity company DOMLEC.

They are Jada O’Brien and Keana Joseph who will attend the Convent High School, Abina Shillingford to attend the Goodwill Secondary and Denelson DeRavariere to attend the St. Mary’s Academy.

The company recently presented school books and other necessities to the students as they prepare to begin their secondary education in September.

Human Resources and Administration Manager Bertilia McKenzie said two of the scholarships were presented to students of DOMLEC staff and two to members of the public. Those given to the public are students who have not already received government scholarships or bursaries.

As part of their scholarships the students receive all text books, stationery, bus fares and examination fees at the end of fifth form, the company said in a release.

The company went on to say that throughout their five years of secondary education the students must perform credibly in order to hold on to their scholarships.

To date 22 students have received DOMLEC scholarships and are attending secondary schools across the island.

Meanwhile the company said this summer over 40 high school and college students are on summer attachments at various DOMLEC offices.

It said the aim of this exercise is to give the students first hand experience in preparing for the job market and allow them to earn some extra money. The summer program has been on going for almost ten years.

So you trying to tell me that out of the entire country the only kids that were qualified for a domlec scholarship are attending schools in Roseau. That is such a BS.What happen to the portsmouth/marigot/Stjoe etc area?DNO we need more detail information and where the previous scholarships were given all over the country so we could make a better determination whether this is just a company politics piece of crap to get recognition from the citizens(I am not speaking about government politics).

I only seeing so call bigshots children on there. All these children parents have big jobs. they have good living conditions. How about giving scholarships to the poor MALAWAY too. So many children who do well academically and their parents cannot afford to send them to high school. There are children that still use candles and BooZAAYE to study because their parents cannot afford to put electricity in their house. Why can’t you guys concentrate on the really poor ones? The ones that are really in need?

It’s good they give back, however Domlec get’s tax breaks for giving so I am shocked they are not giving back even more.
The sale of DOmlec was a bad deal/bad decision. We all agree Domlec should make a profit, we are better off if they make profit – many of us are share holders.

But the important thing is that they have to care about the customer or seem to care, by keeping the cost of producing electricity down. Not just investing in big diesel generators and passing the cost of fuel to the customer. They inherited a HYDRO plant which they were supposed to up keep and improve. It once suffered damage by a storm so Domlec disregarded calls from Gov’t and ordinary citizens to get it fixed and expand on it, because Hydro is our salvation.

Well…Domlec has neglected hydro and took the easy road of diesel generators and passing the high fuel cost to customers. Insultive bad business. Contracts have to be rewritten to take back full control from Domlec given to them in one of the worse deals ever made.

Good for the kids, but what happen the country side? So much for decentralisation and making those out of Roseau feel as if they have equal opportunity.
