Dominica’s sole electric company, DOMLEC, has awarded scholarships to four students who will attend secondary school in the new academic year.

This is part of DOMLEC’s scholarship program, which commenced in 1986, and from which several students have benefited, particularly those who were successful at the Grade Six National Assessment, but did not merit a government’s scholarship or bursary.

The recipients are: Shamarley Carbon, Emilio Blanc, Jehovanni Benjamin, and Johanan Lewis.

The students will attend the North-East Comprehensive School, and the St. Mary’s Academy.

At a ceremony on Wednesday morning, Human Resource and Administration Manager, Phyllis Alexander-Toussaint, urged the students to be confident, and persevere to succeed in secondary school.

“As you begin your journey into high school, I encourage you to learn the words ‘self-confidence’ and ‘perseverance’. You have the ability, power, and talent to excel at high school,” she stated. “Don’t worry what others think about you. Worry about how you see yourself, and what you ought to do to succeed.”

Alexander-Toussaint advised against distraction and underscored the importance of education.

“Do not go to school and waste your time. Your time is limited,” she said. “Go to school with the right attitude to learn… a good education is what will determine your future.”

She noted that the company spends over $35,000 on the scholarship program. She also divulged that DOMLEC scholarships provide “all text books, stationery allowance of $100 annually, transportation allowance of $50 monthly, and payment of CXC examination fees.”

Acting General Manager, Dave Stamp, highlighted DOMLEC’s commitment to education, especially among the youth.

“DOMLEC continues to support education. DOMLEC firmly believes in the value of education, not only internally in our organization, but externally, because an education nation, and an educated country, through the youth, will help the country, and will also help DOMLEC,” he articulated.

DOMLEC awards four scholarships annually, two of which are awarded to members of the public based on academic performance, and two scholarships to children of DOMLEC’s employees.

Twenty-one secondary school students currently benefit from DOMLEC scholarships.
