Four students who are entering secondary school come September, will do so having copped scholarships from Dominica Electricity Services Ltd.(DOMLEC), as the company expands its scholarship program into its 25th year.
The scholarships are administered through the company’s Human Resource and Administration Department and of the four, two are awarded to children of DOMLEC employees, one on merit and one based on need and two are awarded to members of the general public the two highest GSAT students who did not receive Government scholarships or bursaries.
Head of Human Resources and Administration at DOMLEC, Bertilia McKenzie outlined what the students would receive throughout their tenure at secondary school. “We provide to the students all textbooks, an annual stationary allowance of $100, transportation allowance of $50 per month and in fifth form, when they come to do their CXC’s, we cover all of the costs associated with that,” she said.
She also mentioned that the four would bring the total to 21 students as they join the 17 current DOMLEC scholars at eight secondary schools around the island. She pointed out the scholarships also include social activities that may benefit the students while they are out of school.
General Manager of DOMLEC, Colin Cover expressed his delight at this initiative.
Cover stated, “Having been the beneficiary of scholarships and knowing the value of it and what it has done for me personally, I am very happy to be associated with a company like Domlec who sees the value of giving scholarships back to deserving persons and for no other reason than that they are good students and they deserve it.”
Chad Baron and Charleston Hunkins, who will attend the Pierre Charles Secondary School and the Dominica Seventh-day Adventist Secondary School, respectively, are the recipients of the scholarships to children of DOMLEC employees.
Mekala Bonnie and Annisha Burton, who both attended the St Martin School, are the recipients of the scholarships to the general public. The two will attend the Dominica Grammar School and Convent High School respectively.
