Fourteen Dominicans receive scholarships for studies in Cuba

The students received the scholarships on Wednesday

The Ministry of Health, in Collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Cuba, has awarded to fourteen Dominicans full scholarships to attain a university level of study in that Spanish speaking island.

The scholarships were presented on Wednesday, June 21st, 2017 at the Cuban Embassy in Morne Daniel.

The students will be studying in fields including; general medicine, health technology, and civil engineering.

An average medical program, according to statistics, costs of roughly E.C. $300,000 dollars.

Minister for Health and Environment, Kenneth Darroux, told the awardees that the scholarships are the “opportunity of a lifetime.”

“Back in the days the whole idea of Cuba was different than it is right now…We grew up in that culture of communism where it was seen as something bad. Right now, you have many others like myself and even others still in Cuba, who would have paved the way for you and you’re entering Cuba at a much better time than myself, I must say,” Darroux stated.

Darroux expressed his gratitude towards the Cuba’s Ambassador to Dominica, Juan Carlos Frometa de la Rosa.

“On behalf of all of us, the families, the parents, and of course myself as a Dominican, we want to thank the Cuban government for continuing to assist us especially in the area of education and of course health,” Darroux remarked.

Meanwhile, Minister for Education, Petter Saint Jean, gave his sincere thanks to the Cuban government and also charged the students with the responsibility of taking awaiting challenges head on, and even amidst their times of fun, they should be constantly reminded of the sole purpose of their presence in Cuba.

“Please understand that you are not going on a joy ride. Of course, there has to be fun because they made me believe that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy or girl. But in the midst of your explorations, be aware that the only reason or the primary reason for you being selected to do this program is that you can go out there, do well, and come back to your country and assist in our national development,” he said.

According to Saint Jean, considering the difficulty in sending young people to university back in the days, these students who are now receiving the scholarships should “count yourself as being extremely fortunate.”

“You the young people who have been selected to do your course of study in Cuba in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Engineering, whatever field, you should count yourself as being extremely fortunate. Think with me a few years ago pre 2000 that it was just a handful of young Dominicans who were afforded the opportunity to study at a university. Today we have programs in place that address the education of our young people, and this program is just one of the many that we within the Ministry of Education and the government of Dominica,” he remarked.

One of the recipients, Sue-Elyn Myers, who is an aspiring pediatrician, expressed her excitement of being among those chosen, however, she said her physical interaction with her family is one thing she will miss the most.

“I’m going to miss them (her family) a lot because it is a completely different society than Dominica but I plan to make the best out of it with dedication and commitment, I mean, that has always been my goal, and I really look forward to that opportunity,” she said.

Meantime mother of Kelda David, Harolda Henry Riley, told Dominica News Online (DNO) that “words cannot express” her joy and appreciation of the opportunity presented to her daughter.

“Words can’t quite express how I feel…Kelda has been trying for four years now to get a scholarship so to get it now on the hills of the cut off age for awarding scholarships, and it would be remise of m not to tell the students that as they go out they ought to make good use of the opportunity that they have been afforded,” Riley remarked.

During the unrest in Venezuela the government of Dominica removed students who were there on scholarships. These students were returned to Dominica with the promise of continuing their studies in Cuba. Many of these students were already third year medical students. It has been more than a year and these students are still in Dominica and being given the run around by yhe ambassador. He continues to give every excuse in the book. I am happy that these students are going to get the opportunity to study in Cuba but I am very sad that those other students who already invested years of thier life in pursuit of their dreams to become a doctor are wasting away with no idea when or how they are going to finish thier degree. I really hope someone reading this comment can get in touch with the right people who will be able to assist these young people.

    • Venezuela Sorry
      June 22, 2017

You are very correct. I was thinking the exact same thing. These students are in Dominica languishing, why can the so-called Ambassodor do something for these students, some of them had already spent 4 fours in Venezeula, somebody do something. Stupes.

What is the criteria for choosing candidates for scholarship awards in Dominica?
How does the country ensure equal opportunity for all its students with strong academic achievements?

Congratulations young ones, students to be. I wish you all the best and with health and strength as you travel to Cuba, while there, as you study and when you return to home-sweet-home. :)
Be diligent in your studies. I feel you will obviously take it seriously for your wish is to excel and graduate.
God bless and protect each one of you and that His Holy Spirit surround you always.

Well I know for a fact that that 300 grand has been blown up by about $285 grand. first you are placed in a class that would exist with or without you. then a professor earns about $25 US dollars a month then the stipend is $900 US at best and since dlp it has generally been $450 US per year. Now they must pay their airfare. look things.

On a next note make the best of it. The first two years are the toughest.

Why is the Government not securing scholarships for cultural people/students. Personally I know a guy from Morne Daniel who keeps begging Cultural Division and the ministry of education. They not taken him on. We need better representation at cabinet level

Great opportunity gals & lads. As Min Darroux said it is an opportunity of a life time. I agree more so you in the future can return and become whatever you choose to be. a dedicated doctor engineer etc or who knows U can become a politician and get corrupt. Become a dentist in both the public & private practice in addition to being an ambassador a passport pimp and be on a few boards and forget all the communism 7 philosophy..If any of you bc lawyers you can now work for the reds no need to do private practice the reds have lots of cash. Just imagine Trumps son in -law was in the process of getting a large loan from the Russians. So working for the Rusians as a lawyer has lots of opportunity.
Re: the Min of Ed said jack boy or girl isn’t jack for boys? I guess when U guys return from cuba in 6-7 yrs will know there is a feminine & masculine gender. so don’t become politician on ur return.
When U sit to study @ nights just think of the degree as 1000 passports in ur hand. Go…

@Am not Loubiere’s Johnson another D/can in T&T ….. In life we have to think positive and encourage each other to do good, not discourage those who try to do something positive. What you posted was not called for. The young folks made it so far , just congratulate them if you have nothing better to say and move on your merry way. I bet if you or one of your relatives had gotten a scholarship, you would be singing a different tune. Stop being so bitter, life is too short

Who asked you for advice about a career? People choose what they wish, what they feel they will excel in, the career they will enjoy. They have already chosen their career.
As for “Jack”, I am certain it was want of a better word which happens to all of us. Call her “Jill” and move on about this gender issue.
In the eyes of God who created us, there is man and woman, masculine and feminine, male and female, he and she, his and hers. There is a purpose why there is the masculine and feminine gender.
No matter what some people think and want changed today to suit their so-called modern-day ideology and I do think the whims and wiles of Satan, his influence upon them, keeping them under his yoke, confusing them, placing division and disunity and confusion among people, this will never change.
God is unchangeable. When we die, we will be judged by our gender, male or female, masculine or feminine, the gender we were born. We will also not be called “persons.”

Not even my children and I feel a way letting them go but its for their future so best of luck to you all, don’t lose focus. As you can see the cost is over $300 thousand dollars and I doubt most of you have that kind of money. So whenever you feel like messing up think of $300gran and your future ahead of you. It will be tough but take it easy and stay focused.
