The government plans to build two new schools in the north section of the island, Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean has announced.

The schools will be built in Thibaud and Calibishie, he said at the Northern School rally held in Portsmouth on Monday morning and the government has embarked on the planning stages for the school.

“It is our hope that these improvements will contribute to increased achievement levels among our students,” he said. “Your government has also sought to empower you through assistance programs such as the Dominica Youth Business Trust, the Youth Skills Training Program as well through several scholarship programs which allow for better education opportunities for you the young people of Dominica.”

He said the government will continue to support our youth “so that you are able to capitalize on opportunities for personal growth and development.”

The Northern School Rally was held at the Benjamin’s Park and a total of 13 schools participated.

Tell me again the reason for closing the schools in Scotts Head, Cockrane and then you will realize it makes no economic sense to build schools in these small communities, unless you are expecting to bring in more Haitians to fill up these communities.
Go do the math – Poor decision!!!!!!

Why would they not want to build a school in Thibaud? Why shuttle Thibaud kids to Vielle Case and Paix Bouche? Thibaud’s school was demolished with the intension of it being rebuilt. The village needs its own school. It can be built in keeping with the changes in population. This community and its children need to feel that they are equally important where their education is concerned. It is very stressful for students to have to be bused at such young ages to areas that are unbeknownst to them. If I had a five year old in Thibaud, most likely, I would be very discouraged to send my child miles away to go to school.

A school is not just a physical structure, but a vision of academic dreams, a community structure and a right of the government to educate its people. Now the school can be equipped with a library, computer labs and the resources to educate these kids for jobs of the future. I support the building of these schools, and will hold Mr. St. Jean to it.

  4. Guy, I doubt that there are many Dominicans at the moment who are listening to you talking fart, farting from your mouth about building schools; who cares; that is the obligation of the government. Building schools are part of the nations infrastructure, that is part of the job when people get elected!

The job of a so called minister of government is not to accuse people of stealing dasheen, and ultimately kidnapping the falsely accused; and pulverizing (beating ) them with a two-by-four (2 X 4) or 2 X 2 bit of lumber. If you were anything close to a normal human with a conscience; you would have resigned the minute your victim came forward and exposed you for what you are!

In any other country on the face of this earth, you be arrested and charged for kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, battery and the wrongful imprisonment of someone who has not offended you!

I would like to see if the people of La Plaine will have the nerve to reelect you, if they do, that would…

You have no respect for human rights and dignity. How dare u sir? You need to resign or we will force u to. “The poor have rights too”

Is the Government looking at the Population figures at all or only Building for people to see..The population has dwindled significantly in those communities, it may be best for government to shuttle Thibaud students to Paix-Bouche, or Vielle Casse..
Maybe build specialized schools for certain areas.. a good Technical Vocational School in Calibishie serving the North East..
..and on the other hand Lower the cost of minding children so that people can breed..Price of Pampers and Milk and Baby Leyette killing the population growth..
