Minister for Information, Science, Telecommunications and Technology Kelver Darroux has announced that a technical team from India is presently on island to assess the Centre of Excellence and Innovation for ICT, which is moving to its second phase.

The minister made that announcement while addressing a handing over ceremony of tablet devices to students of the Dominica Grammar School (DGS) on Monday.

According to Darroux, the centre which is being housed in the old wing of the Dominica State College (DSC) will help youth in Dominica to develop their skills in technology.

“The government of Dominica is well on its way to finalizing our plans for the second phase of the Centre of Excellence for Information Technology and currently on the island we have an Indian team who is visiting to look at the Centre of Excellence at the State College,” he said.

Darroux stated that the facility will allow students who are ICT inclined, “to further develop their skills, utilize the Centre of Excellence for the development of Apps, and to ensure that right here in Dominica we can have entrepreneurs who can create and develop Apps for our local markets.”

“So yes the potential is here for the information technology centre,” he stated.

Phase one of the project was completed in July 2015 to the tune of $291,000.

The Government of Dominica and the Government of India signed on to a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of the ICT Centre of Excellence for Information and Communication Technology in October 2011.

What’s up with these fellas and their red-shirt wearing tactics at these sort of functions? Is this some covert attempt by Roosevelt and his band misfits and incompetents to psychologically condition people minds to associate the Labour party with ‘development’?

This is welcome news, and many thanks should go to the people of India for providing it. But I do have the same question as I did about the tablets — are the educators there getting the training they need to make the most of this, or is it simply technology being dropped onto students in the hope that it sticks?
