The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Telecommunications Information and Constituency Empowerment have joined forces to secure the professional services of Dominican-born and Canadian Government e-Educational Advisor, Dr Laurelle Jno Baptiste towards the hosting of an ICT in Education Symposium later this month.

Dr. Laurelle Jno Baptiste has worked in education and online learning for over 13 years. She has built education programs and systems for some of Canada’s largest corporations such as The Hudson’s Bay Company with 70,000 employees, and BDO Dunwoody, with over 10,000 employees.

Since 2008, she has served as the Membership Committee Chair of the Open CourseWare Consortium (OCWC), an international community devoted to making digital education accessible to all. Over the past five years, the number of universities involved in the movement has grown from 100 to over 500 worldwide. These universities have digitized their content and placed it online, free for everyone, and in the process improved access to information for individuals all over the world.

Dr. Jno Baptiste has won numerous awards for technology and innovation and is an advisor to educational institutions and technology associations worldwide. Recent awards include recognition as a Pioneer for Change in Canada, award from the city of Toronto for volunteer work and finalist of the Sara Kirke Award for Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Jno Baptiste holds the Doctor of Education and Master of Arts degree in Education, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, the PMP (Project Management Professional), and MBA essentials.

She is the author of an upcoming book titled Learning in the Digital – Education in a Whirlwind.

Dr Jno Baptiste is co-founder of the ground-breaking Scholarlab e-Learning platform for which she has been the recipient of a number of educational awards and accolades in Canada, which is being used in a number of top Canadian and North American Companies with offices in Canada, America, India and Germany. She has eleven (11) years of senior leadership experience helping organizations develop and implement learning strategies.

Dr Jno Baptiste with such wealth of knowledge and experience is very enthusiastic about visiting Dominica, her home country and to make a profound contribution to the educational development of the people of Dominica particularly the young students.

The Symposium will officially open on Monday September 23rd 2013 with an Opening Ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau with Ministers of Government and Dr Jno Baptiste scheduled to deliver short addresses followed by a “Meeting with the Press” session.

For the remaining two days (September 25th and 26th) she will be meeting with a number of School Principals, Educators and Administrators together with students and young entrepreneurs about the importance of and economic benefits associated with education in a highly developed and technologically advanced digital world.

Dr Jno Baptiste will then hold a Lecture at the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies on the evening of the last day of the Symposium on the topic: “Learning in the Digital – the benefits to developing countries like Dominica”

The Symposium will end on Wednesday September 25th 2013.

Let me just say that there are a few great Dominican ICT Women that could work collaborative wonders with Dr. Laurelle Jno Baptiste. The Ministry should schedule a “LET’s GET ACQUAINTED” working session with these women:

These women are AVRIL COIPEL of AID BANK; Ms. Lucia Steadman of Business Training Centre; Ms. Darren Grell of OECS-EDU; Jermaine Jean-Pierre of ICT UNIT. There are many others I did not mention. Bring them together and organize for next year’s “ITU promoted WOMEN AND GIRLS in ICT”.

An opportunity for young girls (but including our boys !!!) to interact and build dreams, aspirations and develop ideas towards career choices.

And by GOD DOMINICA, please provide some annual budget to make all these ideas and activities happen continuously.

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

    Everybody’s searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
    A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me

GREAT NEWS!! I got to know Dr. Jno Baptiste in early May 2013. I did not know she knew me – I taught her sister at St. Andrews in the late ’80s.

I was impressed with her company ScholarLab’s performance and we discussed she sharing more about ScholarLab’s technologies and services to Dominica.

She so wanted to speak to someone within the ICT sector in the Caribbean and a fellow Dominican.

I am pleased that Bennette Thomas – the new Director of Telecoms-the Ministry of Telecoms and the Ministry of Education could embrace her expertise. Great Job – ICT in all endeavors is the way to go.

This was the dream of Abraham Durand in the Ministry of Education who up to last year worked with me in ICT so he must be pleased. Success!!
