ITSS student tops role playing category at Youth Parliament

A student of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School (ITSS) has made her school proud by being victorious in the role playing category as the Speaker of the House of Assembly at this year’s Annual Youth Parliament.

Another student Kaidie Williams on the opposition side placed first for her role as the member of parliament for Roseau Central. She also got the overall winner position.

Dinnia Laudat, who topped the mock parliament session on Monday in the role playing category will receive a cash prize of $400, a plaque and a cell phone for her performance at the parliament sitting. The special session, which was held at the Parliament building  involved students from various educational institutions island-wide, debating on the topic  “In the next 10 years society runs the risk of changing beyond recognition, if pace at which Science and Technology is advancing is left unbridled.”

The first place winner on the government side was Melina Austrie; she played the role of the minister for Public Works Energy and Ports. Second place winner was Garvin Joseph, who performed as the minister of Youth and Culture; while Kieron Bardouille (Dominica State College), who played minister for Environment Natural Resources Physical Planning and Fisheries placed third.

Renee Burton won the fourth place, as minister for Lands, Housing, Settlements and Water Resource Management on the government side.

Meanwhile, second place winner in her role as leader of the opposition was awarded to Britney Pharoah, while Tess Honore placed third as the member for the Marigot constituency. Rick Shaw won fourth place as elected member for the Marigot Constituency.

The Annual Youth Parliament was organised by the local branch of the Commonwealth Parliament Association to commemorate the observance of Commonwealth Day.

Hats of to all the participants and the winners. Special congratulations to the best speaker on the government side, Ms Melinda Austrie of the North East Comprehensive. continue to make yourself and your school proud.

i was particulary impressed by the female tunrnout at the youth parliament. i trust that this is an indication of growing female interest in Dominican politics. Women need to take over this politics thing ….and fix it.

        Anonymous,
Do not feel too bad. It is obvious in Dominica, that only some schools get highlighted. We did not hear about the great performance of Jose Thomas in her role as Prime Minister. It appears that everyone else but the media knows how to report on excellent performance. I have not had the privilege of seeing the debate on tv so I will take your word for it that the two persons you mentioned did well. Congratulations to them and to North East Comprehensive.
