Kalinago student impresses with essay writing skills

Tyson

Carib Territory-born Medina Tyson has made Dominica proud when she placed second in the Senior Division of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Children’s Essay Competition.

Students for this year’s competition were invited to write an essay on the prompt: “What does sustainable tourism mean to your destination?”

Tyson was the only Dominican student to have landed a winning spot in the competition which attracted entries from 19 countries. She is expected to receive a monetary prize of US$1,500.

This is not the first time Tyson has impressed judges with her essay writing skills. Earlier this year she was among two Dominican students who came out on top of an essay writing competition organized by the U.S. Embassy to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

The competition, which was held throughout the six OECS nations which the Embassy is accredited to, asked students to write on how studying in the United States would personally transform them and how they would give back to their communities.

Tyson, 15, a student of the North East Comprehensive School took the US$500 first prize when she impressed the judges with an insightful essay on her hopes to study medicine in the United States and her intention to use both her medical knowledge and the chance for interaction with indigenous North Americans to the benefit of her community.

Judges say she writes clearly with sensitivity and maturity.
