Marcus Atherton Jean-Jacques is Dominica island scholar for 2010

Marcus Atherton Jean-Jacques, 19, of Elmshall has been ranked Dominica’s highest scorer in the GCE Advanced Level examination of the University of Cambridge, and has been awarded the Dominica island scholarship for 2010.

Jean-Jacques, a student of the Dominica State College, is among three Dominican males who showed exceptional performance in the examination, according to Minister for Education Petter St. Jean.

Jean-Jacques achieved a grade A in chemistry, economics, and in general paper, and a grade B in mathematics.

“For anyone who is aspiring to do well in A-levels, my best advice to you is to work hard and practice your past papers if you want to do well,” Jean-Jacques told DBS radio.

The other high A-level scorers were Davidson Anthony Edwards who attained a grade B in economics, mathematics , and general paper and grade C in physics, and Malcolm Jamal Etienne attained a Grade B in each of his subjects, chemistry, economics, physics, and general paper.

Gongrayulations to Marcus, Malcolm and Anthony. You deserve our respect. Congratulations also to the staff of the DSC, especially the chemistry, economics, physics and math instructors. Hats off to the parents.

DSC has come a long way from sharing space with UWI’s Extramural Dept. (ie. SIFOCOL) and sharing labs with DGS to having its own campus. You are moving in the right direction. Dominica relies on your success. Keep evolving!!

Thanks DNO for these types of positive stories. There is hope for our future.

I listened to the news release on Friday and when the mom spoke and said she was both Mother and Father to her Son, that was touching. Ms, Germain deserves all the praise in the world. As a teacher for remedial students she understands the need for hard work, so she instilled that in her son, Hats off to you Ms. Germain, you make all single Mother’s very proud. Continue to work hard Marcus, the journey to excelling has just begun. One good thing about you is that you are a very humble young guy, keep it that way.
I wish you success in all that you aspire to do, I know at the end you will return home to contribute to your country.

    God Bless You!!

In the Name of Allah, The Beneficient, The Merciful.

Marcus and Aunty Jenny, I am very proud of you both. I saw part of the conference on tv. You both spoke well and the smile whilst you both spoke I was indeed impressed.

Aunty Jenny you sent a powerful message to the fathers out there. I hope our men take a hint. Aunty Jenny said (paraphrase) ‘I was both mother and father.’

To you Marcus, I am very proud of you and have always been. You worked very hard and deserve the fruits you’ve reaped. My prayers are always with you all for success but most importantly, success after death.

    Keep it up! :-D

    HEY!

WHAT WITH ALL THOSE POSITIVE COMMENTS? WE NEED BALANCE HERE PEOPLE.

THAT HAVING BEEN SAID: WHATS THE DEAL WITH DOING TWO YEARS OF SUBJECTS TO GET 60 CREDITS, PAY A LOT OF MONEY, GO THROUGH ALL THE HASSLE AND YOU GIVE ISLAND SCHOLAR FOR THREE “A” LEVEL SUBJECTS?

    THATS RATHER DEMORALIZING :-?

FURTHERMORE, I THOUGHT THE “A” LEVEL WAS NO LONGER THE MAINSTAY OF THE COLLEGE… OR OF THE GOVERNMENT?

WHY IS IT THAT A FEW STUDENTS ARE REWARDED FOR DOING A FEW SUBJECTS ON THERE OWN (SEMI PRIVATELY) AND EVERYBODY ELSE IS “ENCOURAGED” TO TAKE THE ASSOCIATE DEGREE (60 CREDITS)?

SO IF I LEAVE WITH A GPA OF 3.9 AND A MILLION SUBJECTS UNDER MY BELT, AND SOMEBODY ELSE LEAVES WITH 2 “A’s” and 1 “B” THAT PERSON WILL GET REWARDED OVER ME?

    WHAT A LOAD OF BS!!!!!!!

I understand and sympathize with you. I thought the same myself. However, on another note A Levels are internationally recognized as opposed to a state college degree. When a student does well at A levels there is no doubt regarding that students ability to do well because it is a very challenging course. Furthermore, the grades some one get from DSC is based only on what we do here, its like going to high school and not writing C.X.C.
I have always believed that all students should be encouraged to do A Levels to compliment the state college diploma.
Congratulations to the young men with these positive results amidst the negative that is going on. I t is very encouraging to see there are still young men with their heads on.

Why are some of you rubbing these children of their achievements with your negativity? Why not list the names of those who excel at the Associate level? This crab in a barrel syndrome we need to leave behind. Some people go to Yale.Columbia,Harvard and Oxford, others to Grambling, Mid-Western & Monroe… At the end of the day we congratulate them all the same for simply getting a degree. Why can’t we do the same here?

So often we hear “our boys/young men are failures in society, let us appreciate the effort of every young person irrespective of the discipline they’ve chosen.

WHAT HAPPEN TO ALL THE STUDENTS WHO DO GREAT AT THE ASSOCIATES LEVEL….CAN WE GET THERE NAMES TOO……….I AM ALL FOR ASSOCIATES I THINK GCE IS A WASTE OF TIME …………..DID IT STUDIED HARD LIKE A DOG AND MIGRATED TO TYHE US AND HAD TO START FROM SCRATCH WHEREAS SOM ESTUDENTS GET CREDITS FROM THE ASSOCIATES AT LEAST $% OF THEM EVEN IF THE SCHOOL WAS NOT ACCREDITED….THERE ARE SCHOOLS IN THE US THAT GIVE YOU A LOT OF CREDIT FOR IT STILL

      January 15, 2011

An associate degree means very little outside of Dominica unless it is accepted by a US college linked with Dominica State College. These are usually third rate US institutions. With A Levels you have greater clout internationally and can get accepted to really top universities such as Oxford or Cambridge. Most of our Island Scholars go there or to Macgill in Canada.

    • reasonable
      January 15, 2011

OH PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u acting like associates level is such a big deal in the US. geeze!!!!!!!!!!!! So what you did it studied hard and migrated to the US. it is not a waste of time. As an American born of Dominican parents, I can say that this is a good idea. you have to realise that in dominica the majority of the students graduate from high school at 16 or 17, whereas in the US we graduate from high school at 18 or 19. Those two years spent doing their GCE is what shapes them, and then by the time they become an adult could come to the US to further their education with some college experience. So what they have to start from scratch………….big deal……….they have been doing it for years……………………DIDN’T YOU?????????????????
      URGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

      • start from scratch
        January 16, 2011

You only start from scratch if you failed your A levels. You could opt out of classes by doing exams. Don’t blame the kids if you did not do well in your A levels.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! It ain’t easy getting an A or B at A-levels especially in Chemistry and math….good job guys….awesome to see men shining!!! Keep up the good work!!

I do have a question though. Since we have switched over to the associate degree and GCE-A levels examination are no longer compulsory, what happens to the students who who excel in that but do not take the A-levels?? Is there any reward for them (those that graduate with the highest GPA’s for example)??

    • advice
      January 15, 2011

There is a separate scholarship for that. The one who gets the highest GPA in their faculty will receive a full scholarship to UWI and has the option to study elsewhere, but the cost will be covered only up to what it would cost to do the program in UWI.

if u want to do that well u better start taking ur school work serious from at least 1st form,,,,, no u won’t get to that point if u just getting serious in 5th or 6th form,,,, that takes discipline that parents has to instill in their children,,,, n don’t forget there are born geniuses,,, they don’t put much effort in studying but simply grasp everything because of high iq’s,,, i had a few in my class in d.g.s,,,,it’s something to really witness,,,no matter how hard u study these peeps just breeze past u,,,don’t even use regular terms,,,,all biological terms are said in scientific language or formulae,,,, when cxc comes all u hear is 7 or 8 one’s,,,,,
