Marigot Development Corporation secures sports scholarship for student

The Marigot Development Corporation (MDC), has secured a Sports Scholarship for Zellie Charles to attend college in the United States under the Sports component of its “Study in the US Program”.

Zellie will attend Essex County Community College in Newark, New Jersey USA on a three year fully funded scholarship valued at over $125,000.00.

The Sports component of the “Study in the US Program” targets students who are part of the Marigot community and/or WESMAR Rangers Athletic Club, with the ability to leverage their talents into US college opportunities.

Last year’s awardee was Chelsey Linton who won gold in the hepthalon at CARIFTA 2014 and who has continued to excel in the NJCAA in the United States. Zellie who won gold in the Long Jump and High Jump at the just concluded Windward Island Secondary School Games is expected to make her mark in the NJCAA and NCAA.

Michael Pascal, Project Coordinator, says they are very pleased that the MDC was able secure College Athletic Scholarships two years in succession for youth of Marigot and hopes this can become an integral part of the Marigot sporting narrative. He encourages the athletes to keep working hard and looks to the day when more than one College Athletic Scholarship is available yearly to youth of the community.

He also encourages parents to see their children’s athletic talent as an asset and to not use its elimination or restriction as the first choice of punishment, as this may be equivalent to throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain.

Zellie is already in the United States and will begin her program at Essex County Community College this fall.
