Students of the Roseau Primary School, St. John’s Primary, St. Martin Primary and Ebenezer SDA have topped this year’s Grade Six National Exams (G6NA).

Heimish Blaize, of the Roseau Primary School, was the top performer, despite the school’s two-month haitus at the beginning of the school year to harbour residents of Petite Savanne who were displaced by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

In an interview on Monday, he told the press, “I feel excited. I guess I feel proud of myself also.”

Blaize stated that the late start of the school year did not at all hamper his educational progress, and noted that the exams weren’t “too difficult.”

The student, who hopes to attend St. Mary’s Academy, in September, thanked his school, mother, and relatives for pushing him toward his goal.

Teacher at the Roseau Primary, Corine George, revealed that teachers met with students in the upper levels, even while the school compound was occupied by displaced residents, in order to complete the syllabus.

“We were meeting so we could continue our studies, although the rest of the school was at home [because] we had a lot more work to do,” she said. “We stayed longer in the afternoons because we realized we had lost a lot of time, and we had to catch up.”

Jada-Madison Joseph, and Nechante Leblanc, both of the St. John’s Primary, came second and fourth, respectively.

An elated Joseph spoke to DNO, expressing her excitement at the news.

“I’m so happy… I’m just overwhelmed, excited, everything. I’m just so glad for myself,” the 11-year-old articulated.

Both students, who hope to attend the St. John’s Academy, thanked their parents, teachers, and relatives for helping them to excel.

In the third position was Megan Vidal, of the St. Martin’s Primary School.

Vidal stated that although she expected hard work to place her within the top five, her faith played an important role in the matter.

“Since everybody was believing in me, and hoping for me, I was really hoping for it. I really believed that I could do it with God’s help, because with God’s help, everything is possible,” Vidal explained. “And, I pushed hard, I studies hard, so I believed that at least I would come out in the top five.”

The 11-year-old named the Convent High School as her school of choice.

Naome Samuel, of Ebenezer SDA, who came fifth, said that studying helped her tremendously.

“Well, all tests are hard, but unless you actually study, and know your work, you will think all of them are especially hard. Certain aspects of the test were different from the curriculum, but because of studying, stuff that just passed by, it came back,” Samuel stated.

They all received four A’s.

Did Roseau Primary get any other scholarship or even a Bursary?

Is it just one star shinning?

One shining star that is more the product of his mother’s tutoring the that of the school.

Congratulation to Naome Samuel. You deserve to get those grades. You studied very hard.

  5. good job to all 194 who got scholarships and bursaries

  6. June 28, 2016

If there are any parents of gonna-be 6graders I suggest in the days leading up to the exam…. make your children relax and not stress over the exam……study only one or more weeks before

  7. June 28, 2016

Oh and congrats to pioneer and my class for getting top school!
    Good job to top 5.

  8. June 28, 2016

Although I got a scholarship with 4As I believe students shouldn’t have to be pushed hard. They need to want the scholarship for themselves and work for it. TO ALL STUDENTS: if you didn’t do well dont feel bad. This is the least important exam you will ever do. You can still do well in CXC or SATs or university exams so this exam is practically pointless and it’s just for schools to brag about. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD SCHOOL GO TO PIONEER THIS YEAR WE GOT 14 scholorships and bursaries out of 16 students in my class… SO BABYE CHRISTIAN WHATEVER PRIMARY!!! LOL

Well, maybe you girls should go to St. Martin primary. Ms. Bonnie got 27 scholarships, 6 bursaries and 4 passes plus top 3. Her grade 6 is consistent throughout the years with mainly all scholarships and many #1s. Pioneer didn’t know what they left behind when they left her behind at Montessori!

All cute ones. Congratulations to the top five. You have studied diligently. Good luck when you enter high school.
Keep in mind, the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ, although stated on a spiritual level: :) “Much is required of the person entrusted with much and still more will be demanded of him.” Therefore, continue studying as hard to further excel. Next time, to college and university when that day arrives.
To the others, I am certain you did your best. Congratulations to you as well. Those of you who will enter high school, it does not mean you will not excel as the others. You are also brilliant.
God bless each one of you!

Congratulation Heimish and the other students. It is good when schools other than the St. Martin, St. Mary’s Primary etc can top the exams it clearly shows that the children’s success is not attributed solely to the school they attend but their application and hard work.

      June 27, 2016

The stupidity continues… You can do well at any school.. All you need are supportive parents, dedicated staff and hardworking students. Stop leaving all the work for the school to do. All the top performers mentioned help and support from parents. And this my friend is the recipe for slendid performance.. Good work all..

Congratulations to the top performers but I am especially thrilled to hear that the Berean Christian Academy is # 4 in the top 10 performing schools in Dominica. This is excellent news and all praise and glory belong to the Lord who makes all things happen for our good!!! If you recall This is the school which was hardly hit by TS Erika not only having lost its structure but loosing over 20 plus students as a result. Parents could not wait and did not foresee this good result and removed their child out of what I must say is one of the best schools on the Island. The resilience. of the members of the Berean Bible Churches and of our very hard working teachers and principal have kept our school flowing. Despite our loss. We gained!!! We train our students to love, obey and serve the Lord Jesus Christ for Life and every thing else will fall in place and that includes academics. If you are a parent thinking of the best school to send your child… THINK BEREAN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY!!!

Ebenezer SDA is not to be confused with Berean Christian Academy. One was across the street from the other. Berean was destroyed, not the SDA Primary School.

        So who said otherwise?

  22. Shocked
    June 27, 2016

Congrats to the 194 students who topped the common entrance. On another note I’m shocked that less than a quarter of the students who sat the exams were able to top it…. Does that mean that all the other students only secured passes. On a whole… there is really nothing to celebrate when less than one hundred of the thousand plus students were able to get all A’s.

    • ?
      June 28, 2016

It has more to do with the number awarded by government that the other not being able to top it. I do not thing it is a set grade which are awarded as much as a set number of students. subject to correction here

Congrates to the top 5 but i believe more scholarships and bursaries should be awarded. Out of 1086 kids, 194 is not much plus the amount given cannot cover much as these days one text book is almost $70-80.00.

  28. June 27, 2016

Great job guys. I am not a Catholic nor SDA but I admire these churches when it comes to education of our kids. What are the evangelical churches doing. Some of the leaders are more focused on the BIG SALARY on the backs of those people. What a shame

    • Sigh
      June 28, 2016

They continue to support the Roman Catholic Schools instead of help build their own.

  29. Concerned
    June 27, 2016

Congrats to the outstanding performers. It’s just sad that you are not adequately rewarded for your success. This is my concern every year when these results are out. The reward should be reconsidered. A child earning a scholarships and bursaries should be rewarded more than just $500 and $300. The children should be awarded at least $1000 or everything included uniforms and bus fare. $500.00 in 2016..for a scholarship is just not enough! This is not a politically motivated comment…please don’t make it political.

well what exactly is the incentive to perform when everyone goes to high school re USE? then again in dca we always celebrate the successes and brush the failures under the carpet. A comprehensive report of the performance of students must be made to help us fully analyze the results of exams. beside increasing the number and value more investment must be made in the school facilities and resources. i mean in political campaigns millions are spent, advisors are drawing thousands each month, political parasites thousands meanwhile schools dont have PAPER for printing, printers, copiers etc not to mention the integration of technology into classrooms. we have to recognize that this is a technological generation, some of the same children we say cannot read just give them a tablet or a phone and see how much they can do with it. The failure to provide them with the facilities that will enable them to learn effectively rests with us. 2016 teachers still have chalk and duster in Dca awa wi

so u trying to tell me that after the 94 scholarships and 100 bursaries ALL the other students failed miserably?? find that kinda hard to believe. I know that there are lots of failures but there are also some more students who would benefit. also i know that there are sometimes only a few points difference in grades for students. brilliant students may have only one or two more wrong and are denied scholarships or bursaries.
INVEST IN OUR CHILDREN AND OUR SCHOOLS and sorry for threatening the NEP salary if u are engaged as such lol

Great job to you high achievers and to those not announced. Good work pays off. I have one comment in favour of scholarships. Please ministry of Education those dilapidated books are not rewarding for scholars also if you do not have the books parents should not have to buy it since the students have not reached their 500 and 300 limits. So please review the arrangements. Those not excelling get new books based on need fine with that. But hmm some of those books are not worthy of giving out to these kids.

  36. June 27, 2016

While congratulating the top performers, I commiserate with the creative children, especially those who are dyslexic, to whom set answers and tick boxes mean nothing. I will always maintain that this exam is one of the worst hand-me-downs from colonial rule.

    • Face the Facts
      June 27, 2016

I really do not know where you got this from and how long ago.
During colonial rule they dd not have tick boxes. You had to study hard and know all the answers or pass a certain percentage. No yes or no and tick boxes.
This yes and no answers and tick boxes occur in Canada, no doubt the US and probably Europe. It makes it easier to pass the exam.
