Dean of Monroe College, St. Lucia Campus, Professor Ramesh Sinanan, announced yesterday that the school has offered six scholarships to the government and people of Dominica.

Sinanan made an official presentation of the scholarships to the Minister of Education and Human Resources Development, Petter Saint-Jean, in Roseau on Monday, December 13.  The formal announcement was made at the installation ceremony of Cecil Joseph as Mayor of Roseau for a fourth consecutive term.  Following the announcement, Professor Sinanan, met with other government officials.

“This is a follow-up to our initial discussions in October,” Prof. Sinanan noted.  “We support the vision of the government to have a university graduate in each household by the year 2015 and our offer of scholarships is a testimony to this.”

The offer is for one full tuition scholarship which will be called the Mayoral Scholarship in honour of the Mayor of Roseau, Cecil Joseph; the other five are partial tuition scholarships.   The total value of the scholarships is approximately EC$75,000 annually.

The scholarships will be granted to deserving students based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The scholarships are offered by Monroe College, St. Lucia Campus, and will be awarded to graduates of the Dominica State College interested in pursuing studies at the bachelor’s level in criminal justice, information technology (IT), hospitality management or public health.

Sinanan stated:  “From the inception, when Monroe College established a campus in St. Lucia in 2007, we said one of our aims is to contribute to the improve manpower requirements in a developing region.  Wherever we go in the Caribbean, we see a hunger for learning and for education and we believe that we can play a pivotal role to increase access and opportunity to quality higher education in the region.  We will continue to reach out to Caribbean governments and the people of the region as a Partner in Education for the advancement of the people of region.”

“Monroe College -St. Lucia is an American institution of higher education and offers an American education, and American degrees. It holds the two highest accreditations available to any American college or university: New York State Department of Higher Education”

NOT ALL AMERICAN DEGREES AND AMERICAN EDUCATION IS WORTHWHILE IN THE LONG RUN.

It is accredited YES but it is not a good school considering the cost AND especially if you decide to pursue a career in America. EMPLOYERS DO NOT LOOK AT A DEGREE FROM MONROE FAVOURABLY. But since it is free money why not take it. And if you are returning to the caribbean to pursue a career why not take advantage of he free money. The receipeients of the scholarships have nothing to loose.

SO YOU SAYING PPL SHOULD GO TO HAVARD, YALE , CAMBRIDGE, OXFORD TO BE RECOGNIZED OR GAIN FAVOUR WITH EMPLOYERS. sO THAT IS JUST PROVING HOW THE SYSTEMS SUCKS.

There is no mention of Elite or Ivy League in the article if you read it properly. There are thousands of schools out there with affordable tuition and an excellent education and produces excellent graduates. Why do you think Monroe is going to the Caribbean to recruit?

Unfortunately red brick universities (Havard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge etc) are recognised before any others. Some blue chip companies/public sector employers want their employees to have graduated from them.

At the end of the day it should not matter where you graduated from as long as you have that degree to show for it.

To the lucky ones, I say, take advantage of the opportunity given to you and make good use of it.

I agree with you saying not all American degrees are worth anything but in terms of the work place here MOST EMPLOYERS DO NOT CARE about where you get your degree they just want you to have one! Dont discourage the youth from getting a free education that can be used anywhere in the world. Truth be told many employers and school look at students from the Caribbean favorably because they see them as stronger than American students, especially in math and science fields! Kudos to the six students who will receive these scholarships

What do you consider to be a “good” school? From what I know about Monroe College you work for your degree and it is recognized in America. There are numerous business organizations in America who come to the School to do recruitment both governmental and non-governmental institutions. So I really don’t know where you are getting your information.
I think it is up to the individual who wants to pursue their education to do all the neccessary research and to choose the best school suitable to their pocket.
I applaud Monroe College for making such a generous offer to the people of Dominica.

here is some more for the rumor spreaders:

    ACCREDITATION

Monroe College -St. Lucia is an American institution of higher education and offers an American education, and American degrees. It holds the two highest accreditations available to any American college or university: New York State Department of Higher Education (http://www.highered.nysed.gov/) accreditation, and accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (http://www.msche.org/) Details can be found at their web sites or at http://www.monroecollege.edu/. In addition the St. Lucia Ministry of Education authorizes the College to grant degrees in St. Lucia.

Middle States is the only legally authorized agency to accredit degree-granting colleges and universities in the Middle States region of the United States, which includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and several locations internationally. That authorization is granted under strict regulations set by the U.S Department of Education. The US Department of Education DOES NOT directly grant accreditation to colleges and universities.

Academic standards, course content, grading systems, qualifications for graduation, tutor requirements, etc are all defined by these accreditation agencies.

    Accreditation

Monroe College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation.

The college is authorized by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York to confer the Associate in Science (A.S.), Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degrees. More limiting than poverty, more limiting than politics is a negative attitude. Many of my fellow countryman, Mr. Anonymous, are forever searching for reasons why something is not good
enough. Well, let me tell you, I have found that such a defeatist attitude is the most destructive part
of the Dominican psyche. Every being is ultimately responsible for the condition in which they find
themselves. Any education is better than no education.

there are more positive things happening than is reported, and that is why I always say it just depends on what you choose to hear. We believe that there are enough resources around us to aid such causes, let us hope that such gesture not only come from external forces, but our local business here in Dominica can learn a thing or two by engraving their marks in investing in the future of other aspiring Dominicans. God bless this land.
