More scholarships, medical care from Cuba

cuba-dominicaDominican students are set to benefit from a new program set up between the government of Dominica and its Cuban counterpart.

For the next three years 13 scholarships will be awarded to local students on an annual basis.

Additionally Cuba is offering free medical care to three Dominicans in need of special treatment.

The announcement was made on Thursday evening by Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, at a panel discussion observing 35 years of scholarships to Dominica by Cuba.

“From 2015 to 2018, we going to have a new program where every year we going to have 13 scholarships being awarded to Dominican students,” he said.

He said in recent years the scholarships have been dwindling but this is all going to change in the next academic year.

Darroux said seven of the scholarships are going to be in medicine and one in dentistry.

Three scholarships will be in “varying disciplines” while the remaining two will be in post graduate specialties such as internal medicine, pediatric, gynecology, obstetrics, general surgery, and hygiene and epidemiology.

In terms of the medical care, Darroux said the program is set to begin in 2015 for “three patients that we think probably cannot continue care here or probably special cases that might require hospitalization or intervention management in Cuba.”

The Cuban scholarship programme started in 1979 as part of the Cuban Government’s assistance to Dominica in the aftermath of the destruction of the island by Hurricane David, when a group of eleven Dominican students left the island to pursue tertiary education.

Some of them have been blasting Cuba as they did the Venezuelan government. They never consider who assisted D/ca in times of need and some of those students. If they keep it up and the Cuban government hears of it (they probably have), they will either be reluctant or not lend a helping hand to educate those students.
Dominicans, be careful what you state on Websites. You are doing a disservice to your country and those who would like to study in Cuba. Some of you must bridle your words and your fingers on the keyboard. You should ever be grateful to Cuba for these scholarships.

Cuba needs to provide us scholarship in Agricultural Engineering and management.
These are the skills Dominica needs to implement smart agriculture with excellent management so we can sustain our local production and provide competitive price crops for exports to our drive economy.

Cuba is the best country to learn from as it fed itself on Agriculture for 50 years with a USA embargo and survived.

The era for more scholarship in Medicine is not critical anymore. we have enough doctor’s on island therefore the need to scale back this discipline.

This is wonderful but the government needs to get some modern equipment for the hospital so the returning doctors can put their education to good use. It’s like having a carpenter with no tools.

Words can’t express my gratitude to the Cuban Government for such epowerment to our people here in Dominica .Thank You Cuba , thank you so very much . Now I would say to the Govenment of Dominica that this opportunity should be opened to all Dominicns here and abroad. Dominicans ar catching hell in in other people’s country but what cn we do , mut stay because should we return , what are we gong to do? just increasing the unemployment rate . We would be greatful if this opportunity be extended to those of us abroad and not saying to locals only . We are all Dominicans who migrated searching for survival , especially those in the Caribbean,
    Thank You
