The National Drug Prevention Unit took its community outreach program to Dublanc.
Drug Abuse Prevention Officer for the West Malcolm St. Rose said last night’s program was held under the theme “Drug in our Society.”
He said it was aimed at bringing about change in the community and is part of an ongoing program in Dublanc.
“The National Drug Prevention Unit has a mandate to significantly reduce the demand for drugs on the island. As we have over the years sought to do this through established programs. In recent times, we have impacted on a new strategy to go out there and conduct community outreached programs to speak to the converted. You normally find that the people who come out to the meetings are people who are not so involved in the drug abuse practices and lifestyle,” he said.
According to St. Rose, no community is immune to drugs. “We know that Dublanc is a sporting community and we know the effects drugs can have on young people,” he said.
Local Magistrate Gloria Augustus and Police Inspector Claude Weekes were among officials who addressed the proceedings.
I can say that this meeting was GREAT! All the people who spoke did an excellent job and as usual Inspector Weekes was “BLAZING”….. The activity was very well attended and we really got good information to help us in our desire to see our community drug free. I think this was VERY thoughtful of the Drug Prevention Unit and we really would like to thank them for this very important meeting in our community. For the whole day there was a buzzz in the village about that wonderful meeting! Thanks to everyone who made it happen…..
This is a good move which should be expanded nationwide. You are on the right track.
Of course, those who are involved in drugs will not participate but they could be reached in other ways.
Print some brochures and distribute to every household, even on the streets as some do when they distribute religious material.
I recognize that this is an expensive venture but at least try with the help of the government and fundraising. Every Dominican should be involved in this project whether they are teetolars and off drugs.
God bless and expand your effort.
Flyers brought in by the drug unit were distributed at the meet which I felt was very good!
Thanks Mr. St Rose for that meeting. Mr. Weeks is the best. Everyone of the speakers was great, they were very well attculate, we really need to eradicate this drug vibes from our communities, and Dublanc is no exception, it would be so shameful to know that Dublanc is the first community to produce West Indies players and is still doing so today and then for all this to be flushed down the drains all because of drugs, no! We are going to do everything within our powers as a community to arrest that problem. There is a young crop of boys and girls who are showing great interest in sports and culture, so people of Dublanc if we want to see these young people bloom into productive men and women we must wake up now and speak out against all the ills of our society.
