New DSC students encouraged to invest in their future

New students as DSC Orientation Week begins

Registrar of the Dominica State College (DSC), Dr. Schuyler Esprit, has charged a multitude of incoming students to the institution with the task of choosing to invest in themselves with a school that sets the tone for future success.

She made that statement on Monday, August 28 at the DSC Auditorium which was filled to the brim with about 500 news students participating in the start of Orientation Week 2017.

“When we say to choose DSC, what we really mean is that we are choosing a future for this country, we are choosing to develop Dominica’s human resource, and ensure that we have locally accessible experts in our range of industries and sectors,” she said.

Orientation Week 2017 runs from Monday August 28th to September 1st 2017 and includes a number of activities ranging from campus tour/meeting to information sessions and success workshops, and will culminate on the last day with a series of campus activities under the title of ‘Fun Day.’

Dr. Esprit added that the goals of the DSC are similar to that of the government of Dominica.

“If you heard the Honourable Prime Minster (Roosevelt) Skerrit’s 2017 budget address, I hope you did, it would not be lost on you that our goal here at DSC aligns with the government’s strategy to improve that national economy by encouraging and incentivising our students and future workforce to learn at home, work at home and return home to build our public and private sectors,” she stated.

She remarked that the success of the initiatives of the government and the schools lies within the hands of the students themselves who will become the “future workforce.”

“You have to choose to invest in yourself and learn how to create opportunities for others,” she noted.

The DSC Registrar also cautioned the parents of the new students saying that they must play their part in helping the students to understand the importance of creating a future for themselves and the “peaceful retirement” of the parents.

“We know how hard you work to ensure that your children are given the best education. We understand that in the context of scare resources, we want our children to become globally competitive to achieve all their goals. However, be careful not to transform education into a prestige activity such that it brings entitlement greed and selfishness in you or your children,” she remarked.

Meanwhile Valedictorian of the July 2017 graduating class, Stephanie Pascal, left the new students with the thought that whatever a student gets out of DSC at the end of their academic journey is reflective of what was put into it from the very beginning.

“I am here to be honest with you, what you put in is what you get out. So to some people, DSC is the worst institution ever…and others would say that the Dominica State College will prepare you for life. The Dominica State College gives you everything that you need to go far in this world, I am one of those people. I can say that because I put my most into this school, and I advise all of you to do the same,” she remarked.

There should be a course taught about ownership of owning a water company that is our oil and it’s going to waste the world needs it. We must be taught about the ownership of our water . We need to build water companies in all villages and put people to work , we do not have to beg outside people , we have to do it for our selves and it starts at the college .

Compare the faces of the students in the above DSC picture (yawn) with the faces of the students in Shah Rukh Khan’s video clip “Live Your Dream”.
