A process to ensure effective communication among the country’s youth and the establishment of district youth councils are some of the first issues the newly elected president of the National Youth Council (NYC) says will be addressed.

Jaihsiah Benoit  took the majority of votes at the NYC’s general assembly held on Sunday in Portsmouth.

He beat former president Fernella Wenham by almost 30 votes.

He told Dominica News Online in an interview that based on the outlook for the next two years, he wants to develop a plan that is “more nationally represented and somewhat more coordinated than has been done to date”.

“We just want a new approach to the way we organize ourselves so we can bring to bear the wealth of talent and skills that can be found within Dominican youth,” he said.

Bennoit says focus will also be placed on climate change, health, education, unemployment and good governance.

Meantime the outgoing president Wenham congratulated the incoming president saying she looks forward to the NYC’s future plans.

“May they lead the organization to the best of their ability and I look forward to future plans and activities by the National Youth Council of Dominica,” she said.

Nadege Roach was elected 1st Vice President while Dalton Maronie was elected 2nd Vice President.

    I am congratulating the NYC.

I am only asking that you try to reach out more to other youth groups ahead of your elections. Choirs, artistic clubs, school clubs, church groups etc should also be counted in your membership!

    Pursue that!

Maybe the past president should outline the achievements during her reign. I do not think the elections was based on performance.

An NYC cannot be effective without fulfilling its role of being a voice for the voiceless youth. An NYC must critique Government policy and call for strateggic decisions to address youth issues. The past leadership, though very strong in personanlity lacked in concensus building and taking on policy issues head on. Congratulations to the new President, pursue your vision, dont re-invent the wheel, you hold a very important position and policy makers will listen to you, be strong and seek wisdom from those of us more than willing to share ideas and plans that the NYC had already carved out including what is contained in the National Youth Policy of 2002. We help build the NYC in Dominica, and across the region, you will discover who we are along the way. God Bless you and Your team…..

somehow i feel this team has a good composition of young people, and the leader has already made a huge influence in the areas of youth, education and the environment.

i hope he can achieve the things he has set aside in his plan.

I do not think that the youth rally on Sunday to elect the new Council was publicized. How was the names for the new nominees arrived at? I think the national youth council affects youths all over Dominica not some. The attitude among the youth where you find because I know you and you are my good friend (Bon Ja) I will let you know have to stop. We all have ideas to offer both big and small. With all this being said I wish the new council good look and I await to see the changes the talk about. It is always good to see the changes we can make when we are on the outside but once we get in there out eyes are turned to another direction…

The article has an error ..This assembly was held on sunday.
There were youth groups from all 8 youth districts around the island.
As for being a nominee it was open to everyone.Anyone could nominate you and someone has to second that nomination. When all nominees was in,there was a vote via ballot.

If there was only one nominee for a position ,it was given to the nominee by default

New blood was needed at the NYC. The former lady just lacked what it takes to be a youth leader.

It is refreshing to hear of such good things from the Young, but remember guys, action peaks louder than words. You need to analyze how realistic these ideas are in the national context. We are all aware of the attitude of most people in organizations like these. I m sure Ms Wenham can attest to that. I wish you luck and best wishes on your undertaking but dont be surprised if your efforts are not appreciated or acted upon.
