Nothing sinister about selecting scholarship recipients – education minister

St. Jean

Minister for Education Petter Saint Jean says there is a process by which every scholarship recipient is selected, dismissing any  suggestions that the procedure may be informal.

Saint Jean told a DBS radio program Friday that a special committee is charged with reviewing applications thoroughly. He noted the character of individuals has been a major factor being scrutinized.

“Since we are sending out ambassadors to these various countries, we expect the best,” he said.

“If we require 10 students, we may select say a total of 30 or 40 of these applications. It then goes through a further screening process, and for every scholarship program, there is a selection committee” which could include Dominicans and nationals from territories offering the scholarships.

“So we would have representatives of the Venezuelan government or the Cuban government as the case may be in most of these scholarship programs,” Saint Jean stated.

    oh please that’s bollocks
that process is for some scholarships such as Cuba, Venezuela and all the other “public scholarships”

    Simple question
Has anyone ever seen a scholarship to midwestern state university or Grambling University advertised anywhere? go to education and see if you can get one… Is 1 person that approving that one and as the saying goes no name no warrant

That’s actually not quite how MSU scholarships work. Past students and MSU recruiting staff play major role in who is selected. I know – I have been part of recruiting process in past.

IN TODAY’S WORLD IS NOT WHAT YOU KNOW IS WHO YOU KNOW. IT HAPPENS ALL OVER THE WORLD. I’M IN NY AND IT IS SAD TO SEE FAVORITISM AT THE WORK PLACE. PROMOTION IS BEING GIVEN NOT FOR HARD WORK BUT TALE CARRIERS.

It is human nature, a genetically imprinted fact that has very little hope of changing. Go online and search for stuff like understanding human nature or social psychology. A suggested read is The Body Language Rules. Its amazing what evolutionary theory can teach us.

It would be nice to look at the constituencies of those who receive scholarships from the state. What would be interested is a complete list of those sent to study over the past 10 years and to find out where they are from, educational background and so forth.. It would be nice to see those taking bout all is well to swear by God’s name and say that the scholarships are properly distributed without fear or favour or ill -will. Such info should always be made public. In the meantime lets’ just say that some folks are brighter than others based on geographical space and other issues…. Now that the minister said all is well – one might well see a university graduate from every family in Dominica before the butter for the bread done, or the sugar for the coffeee done, or the gas for the engine done…..

Mr. St. Jean you’re the Minister and you’re the one responsible to make the decisions, it’s incumbent on you to make the choices. The UWP cannot be in opposition and want to make the choices for the government. Go ahead and take the decisions in the best interest of the country.

You and the government cannot allow some unscrupulous UWP individuals call the shots and decide who should go and where they should go to study. Should you all UWP to dictate who should go then you have failed the thousands who voted the DLP to take decisions on their vehalf.

You have been doing a fantastic job so far, keep on keeping on and the Good Lord bless you and the Dominica Labour Party. Keep providing those scholarship to worthy Dominicans.

I think its kinda unfair. but yet again if after all some ppl do for this country in terms of sports and they try applying for a scholarship and cannot get one after representing the island on the highest international scale ever then something is wrong

everyone know that is a big big lie.. some of the students who really deserve the scholarship, show that they deserve it when they go to these countries and excel,( some students have excelled and are excelling) but majority of those who get the scholarships are because of pull string.. everyone knows thats how it is..

Domincans are not as stupid as you think or may suggest, some people have plenty red eyes and they have thinkonytis because someone does it for them but thank God, we are not stupid. Maybe you need to spend some more time in your bible and church.

ok i was having my doubts but now i know for sure that this man does not tell the truth. I have first hand experience of getting access to one of these scholarships without going through any selection process. as a matter of fact i made the application after i had already received the shcolarship lol and not to mention that the process of screening done by the representatives of the receiving country is useless as most people lie or tell half truths when asked questions and besides who is selected by the government must go no matter what. for example students are being given classes in a certain foreign language for over 5 months so that they can start the program as soon as they arrive. at the end of that time they have not learned anything as a direct result of not attending any classes. however that did not affect their chances AT ALL. who knows maybe things have changed and it is more strict today but two years ago what Mr. St. Jean said here would be a total and complete LIE.

You pretending to be so high and mighty, why didn’t you refuse the scholarship since you knew that it was a pull string? I guess you like the pull string when it suits you eh.

You know that you didn’t go through the right channels, but you still accepted the scholarship.

I sincerely hope that you are making good use of this opportunity.

PS: If your conscience is overburdened, offer to pay for your scholarship.

    • student
      February 21, 2011

Ok to all those above talking crap the problem is not the way in which i got the scholarship. I could care less if I got through on a pull string it is happening all over the place and almost everyone is taking it when they can get it. It is an informally accepted part of our society (I can go into complete detail as to why but that would make this post way to long). The important thing is that I’m making good use of the opportunity unlike other people who got through by the same method as me and basically wasted government (of both states) funds and time.

The point i was trying to make is that based on my experience and the statement that the minister made i can quite safely say that this man tells lies. I had my doubts but now i have proof. That is all.
