The National Youth Council of Dominica (NYCD) will now be better able to capture the work of young people across the island after being provided with $11,380 worth of electronic equipment from the government of Dominica.

Equipments which include cameras, computers, microphones, and various storage devices will be used to further enhance the council’s media team.

President of the NYCD, Jahisiah Benoit told a handing over ceremony held at the Calypso House at Bath Estate on Thursday that the council was “big on ideas” but without the necessary equipment it was unable to the job it intended to do.

“So I think it is very timely,” he said of the donation.

He noted further that the media team was launched nine months ago and since then the group has gone far beyond the initial vision that even the executive of the NYCD had for it.

“Nine months ago we really began work in pushing the media team forward in 28 young people willing to commit themselves to be a part of the media team. It shows that there is true and genuine ownership of this team by its members,” he said.

He added, “Following the launch we knew that we were big on ideas but needed support to make this happen. We got support from the private sector, especially through the kind assistance from Marpin 2K4, who expressed willingness to allow the youth of Dominica a platform once a week to conduct a show that they could develop and produce themselves. That show is now established as Youth,Camera, Action.”

He said the council has also established partnership with the Youth Development Division, through state-owned DBS Radio, and a program is aired every fourth Saturday in the month addressing the issues pertinent to youth development.

“Several other platforms were established,” he added.

Benoit thanked the government of Dominica for its assistance and the NYCD Media Team for their hard work and dedication.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information, Telecommunications and Constituency Empowerment, Ambrose George who gave the featured address at ceremony, congratulated the youth on island in their continued effort, not only in creating a bond in friendship, but also to “to actively engage and mold the minds of the next generation of Dominica’s leaders.”

According to George, it has been a pleasure to be in the presence of the youth of Dominica.

“I am delighted that you have developed an in house media team with indigenous skills for youths with as many as the social media available and at your disposal,” he said. “It is without a doubt that the future of this country rests on the progressive youth with their varying skills and talent.”

Sub-Committee Coordinators of the NYCD’s media team also were presented with certificates at Thursday’s ceremomy.

The members include; Media Team Deputy Coordinator, Shannon John, Internet Sub-Committee Co-Coordinator, Mishell Abraham, Television Sub-Committee Co-ordinator, Prisca Julien and Radio Sub-Committee Coordinator, Nester Phillip.

The NYCD Media Team was launched in January 2014 and has some 28 members.

If this young man who is suppose to be guiding the nations youths and be a role model is allowing himself to be part of an election machinery by this Government fooling the electorate by giving goodies before an election, the youth population must discard him at the next NYC election, this is an insult to the intelligence of the nations youth, where were all these gifts fourteen years ago, is that an achievement after fourteen years of representation??

Did the existing NYC 14 years ago ask for it? Don’t blame Mr Benoit for seeing it fit for the NYC Media Team to request equipment from the Ministry of TELECOMMUNICATIONS. If the party used him as part of their election ploy, then the fault is with them, not the young man seeking to better the nation’s youth, REGARDLESS of his political affiliation.

This is such a ridiculous statement it’s not funny. If I am the one working 8 or more hours a day, 5 days a week and I get my salary at the end of the month, isn’t it my hard work and sweat that’s feeding me? It’s time we get out of this slave mentality Dominicans. The government was put there to do a job. If they are doing it efficiently, then fine, keep them there. However, if they are failing to be efficient at their jobs, then its time to let them go, it’s as simple as that.

Why? Is Lennox Linton the leader of the opposition?
The PM should NOT wast his time on the “no-vist”.

I hope the donations are not an effort to keep you away from asking for a debate between Mr. Lennox Linton and Skeritt.
