Hikers on the trail

On Saturday 2nd April, 2011, The Pierre Charles Secondary School’s Adventure Club in collaboration with The Youth Centre Club (YCC) of Grand Bay successfully completed Segment 3 of the Waitukubuli National Trail which was from Bellevue Chopin to Wotten Waven.

The contingent included certified tour guide, Delon Williams; the coordinator of the PCSS Adventure Club, Mr. Irvin Jackson; president of YCC, Mr. Walson Pacquette; Youth Officer for the South, Mrs. Sharmane Dickson, as well as approximately 35 others from the Adventure Club, YCC and DOMTREADERS Hiking Group.

The hike was described as moderate and took approximately 5.5 hours. The group began at 9:25 a.m. at Bellevue Chopin and walked for about 2 hours before reaching the community of Giraudel. It was very obvious that we were approaching Giraudel since patches of anthirium plants were evident along the trail.

From Giraudel, we walked down a valley for about an hour until we arrived at a river. From the river, the most difficult part of the journey arrived. This was an hour’s climb up the mountain side to the Morne Prosper Community. From here, we walked through the community, and then trekked downhill until we arrived at the end of the trail at Wotten Waven at 2:55 p.m. To top it off, we relaxed in the therapeutic pools at Screws.

The PCSS Adventure Club is a very active and vibrant club. One of the main aims of the club is to expose the students to what Dominica has to offer. It fosters an appreciation of the natural, unspoilt beauty of our beloved country.

The students are given a chance to simply discover Dominica and to fully enjoy it.  In doing so, they get a chance to know various communities and natural attractions in Dominica. They also learn a lot from each experience.

Thus far, the club has visited many waterfalls, including Bwa Neff Falls, Trafalgar Falls, Sari-Sari Falls, Middleham Falls, Spanny Falls, Denier Falls and the Emerald Pool. Additionally, we have enjoyed quite a bit of Dominica’s beaches, both on the east coast and west coast. Other areas that we visited includes Cold Soufriere, Chaudière Pool, Perdu Temps, Miracle Valley, Fresh Water Lake (Roseau Valley) and the Tete Morne to Soufriere Trail, to name a few.
