The Pierre Charles Secondary School (PCSS) has won the 7th Annual 4-H Local Dinner Plate Competition.
The winning school consisted of three members, including President of the 4-H Club at the Pierre Charles Secondary School Lizanne Roach, Cliesha Dowe and Leticia Roach who prepared grilled rosemary ranch chicken malee and garlic mashed potato delight.
The team received a cash prize of $800, a certificate of recognition and a participation trophy.
Four other schools including the Portsmouth Secondary School, Dominica Grammar School, Isaiah Thomas Secondary School and North East Comprehensive School took part in the competition held at the Dominica Grammar School on Saturday.
The competition spearheaded by Former President of Dominica, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool was held is in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Constituency Empowerment, the Youth Development Division and the office of the President.
Roach told the media shortly after she and her team were awarded their winning prize that it is the first time the PCSS has won that competition and they are very excited.
“We thought Portsmouth Secondary School was going to beat us but then we ended up victorious,” she said.
Roach stated further that her team is thankful for the support received to have won that title.
“We are thankful for the 4-H family and friends that help us and I would like to say a blessed thank you to Miss Sophie Henderson from Grand Bay, a teacher at the school… she was with us through it all.” she stated.
Second place went to the North East Comprehensive School; a three member group consisting of Adelle Durand, Emmalee Francis and Christina Pierre who prepared Carnival Stuffed Chicken, B.A.M pineapple sauce, Ying Yang Swirls and His Excellency Pigeon Pea Puree.
They received a cash prize of $600.
Portsmouth Secondary School secured third place and received $400.
The group members were Cassy Saverin, Tatyana Baron and Mitsy Gordon who prepared Copen Crapaud Rimbow chicken baked, crocked yam and mellow sauce.
The Dominica Grammar School secured the fourth spot with preparation of Poulet A L’anana served with yam Melangee.
The team members Naomi Francis, Kevon Boyd and Lakim Roudette received $375, while the Fifth place was secured by the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School with the preparation of Grainpain Poulette, Patat et Pois Angole and Banane Isaiah.
Team members were Akira Peters, Ketina Lestrade and Claricia Roumou received $350.
4-H Coordinator, Shirley Alexander, said the Dinner Plate Competition involved the preparation and display of local dishes with its main focus this year being poultry and an accompaniment.
“Today we witnessed the skills and talent of the five finalists from the zonal competition which was held early this year,” she said
She revealed that this year additional sponsorship was received from the National Authorizing Office of the European Development Fund through the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM).
The Isaiah Thomas secondary school received the Dr. Liverpool’s Choice Award and Bert Paul received special recognition as an outstanding local leader.
The judges of the competition were Melanie Henderson, Marynese Titre and Josette Robinson.
