Three students from the Petite Savanne Primary School are among the top five achievers in this year’s Grade Six National Assessment.
They spoke of their success to Dominica News Online on Tuesday.
Hallie Francis, 12, who placed third, said she is very proud although she didn’t expect to receive a place in the top five.
“I had confidence in myself but always thought that other students would perform better than me,” she stated.
She said that her success is due to hard work.
Francis pointed out that preparations were “quite hard” because she had to attend extra classes, had to play less and watch less television.
She noted that her mother, class teacher and Principal, helped in the preparation for her exams.
Francis, who will be attending the Pierre Charles Secondary School in the upcoming school year, said she wants to be a Police Officer or an accountant when she grows up.
Meantime, Samine Darroux who place fourth in the exam, told DNO said she felt “excited” and “elated”.
The 12-year-old said preparation for the exams was difficult, “because you had to learn everything from the previous grades.”
“You had to revise everything,” she stated.
She encourages other students who want to succeed to, “work hard, watch less television, limit the amount of time spent playing with your friends and read a lot.”
Darroux, who will also attend the Pierre Charles Secondary School, said she wants to be a Doctor or ‘song star’ when she grows up.
Sherdina Antoine, 11, who placed fifth, told DNO that the news of her success caught her by surprise on her way to Roseau on Tuesday morning.
“I was on a bus on my way to Roseau and I heard they were announcing the results,” she stated. “When I heard my name I started to scream.”
She continued, “I feel excited and overjoyed.”
Antoine said she appreciated all the help she received from her parents, teachers, aunts and principal.
She too will be attending the Pierre Charles Secondary School and said she would like to become a Lawyer when she grows up.
The exam results were released on Tuesday morning.
Congrats! I know the one right at the end
Congratulations to the children! When you have committed Principals, Teachers and parents the children excel. If the school is encouraging that kind of relationship, they must be proud. I hope they end up at Secondary Schools where that same formula exists to ensure their continued success. Schools should never be proud of poor achievement. There must always be efforts to do better. We cannot give up on children. The whole idea of doing that is a sick one and the school that gives up on children should be shut down.
Congratulation.Congratulation. I’m very proud of you all and I want to wish you all success in all your endeavors.Put God first bin everything you do.

way to go girls! i am so proud of my birth place. here’s wishing you all prosperity in the begining of your journey. it has just began. the sky’s the limit. just put God first.
Congrats to all the students who sat – and those who excelled. DNO what’s the name of the two who placed 1st and 2nd and get the pictures also nuh!!. I understand they from Pioneer school. The Ministry of Education should find out from both Pioneer and Petit Savanne schools what contibuted and attributed for the success of those kids – what are some of the best practices coming from the schools and try to replicate whatever it is among the other schools and among the other parents so we can multiple the amount of bright girls and boys we have on island. My advise to the Children is the work has just begun so continue to strive to be the best you can be. I pray that the Good GOD continue to Bless you all.

hmmmm – you didn’t read the headline man. The top two were hailed throughout the day yesterday.
The school may have better practices but that’s not all, if you notice the parents of these children go all the way for their children from birth. They expose them to learning from baby to now, while other parents start when the child is in grade five or six. These children, nobody had to send them to study because they were raised from small to appreciate learning. Their toys were educational,, some do not even have television at home they watch appropriate videos which they can learn from. They watch cartoon and fun movies too but on the weekend. They eat well balanced meals and they play sports and keep healthy,, no couch potatoes. We may say they have money but we can do the same with the little money we have, is not how expensive you buy stuff for your children but its WHAT you buy for them. some “poor” kids have more expensive games, cellphones and tablets than these children who perform well. Their parents make the right choice. If the parents can take a stand it can work!
Congratulations to the students and their achievements! The teachers at PCSS await you all and are ready to help you all to continue to succeed and achieve your goals! Great things come from the South!
Well done students from Petite Savanne. Many times we forget the teachers who earn just a measly salary, compared to others, yet put in so much effort.Mr Hilaire i suspect you had this class.
