A Photography contest depicting community scenes around the island and the donation dry goods to local charities are among highlights for Library Week 2013.

The week will run from May 13 -17 under the theme ‘Communities connect at the Library’.

Chief Librarian, Magdalene Robin, told DNO that new ideas will be implemented during the week. One of them is asking people with over due books to bring in dry goods which will be donated to a charity.

“We usually have amnesty where people bring in their books free of charge without having to pay the fines,” she explained. “But this year we are thinking of instead of having people pay the fines, they could bring in some dry goods to make a basket or something to give to the Grange Home for the Aged in Portsmouth and the Grotto Home.”

There will also be a photography contest, acting librarian Sylvia Toussaint indicated.

“We have what we call a Photography contest … there are conditions to that where it must be a photo of your community. There are three prizes, first, second and third place and the photograph becomes the property of the public library. We will be asking somebody who is versed in photography to judge the photo for us and the best three will receive prizes,” she said.

She there will also be a brief write up on the top three photos.

Toussaint pointed out that May is significant to the library because it was officially opened during that month.

Other activities for the week include an opening ceremony at the Grand Bay Public Library on the 13th; two preschools are also invited to the library to get tips on how to take care of their books. A reading session will be included.

On Tuesday (May 14) there will be career advising sessions where students from two high schools will be enlightened on their career path.

A financial education session for two high schools during which students will be educated on effective spending and given tips on saving, will be held on Wednesday and primary schools have been invited to visit the library on Thursday when they will be given the beginning of a story and asked to complete it.

The completed story will then be placed on exhibition.
