PM Skerrit reaffirms commitment to education and Dominica

The Prime Minister has stressed the importance of education

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, is calling on nationals to take advantage of the opportunities in education provided by his Government.

He enforced the statement while affirming his commitment to the island’s development.

“We’ve had to ensure that we invest heavily in education so that our children will not only have access to schools but the means of taking advantage of that access. It is one thing to create spaces at the schools but… the parents [must] have the means to take advantage of this…” he said.

He continued, “This is why we started off with a School Transportation Programme in one community but recognizing the national need for this, we have expanded to virtually the entire country and Tête Morne benefits from this.”

The Prime Minister had these words of advice to the young students of Tête Morne which could apply to the island’s youth.

“My challenge to the young people of Tête Morne is that you must take advantage of the opportunities. You are in school, you must study. Too many of our children play every day. There’s nothing wrong with having a computer or television or cable at home but you must not overuse them. We have to read, we have to study and pass exams because that’s the only way you can help yourself, your family and the country,” he stated. “Your Government is spending a lot of money to keep the schools functioning; all we’re asking you to do is study and do well.”

The Prime Minister also advised parents to attend PTA meetings.

He added, “As the Prime Minister of this country, I am absolutely committed to Dominica and its wellbeing. [I am committed to] doing everything humanly possible to ensure we create a better way of life for every single family and every single Dominican in this country. That’s my commitment but at the end of the day, I cannot do it alone. I require the support, solidarity and cooperation of all Dominicans who are prepared to put Dominica first before parochial and partisan considerations.”

He was speaking at the Tête Morne Village Council meeting last week.

Skeritt can fool the older folks as much as he wants, but he cannot fool the young people with his promises, of commitment . Remember prior to the general elections their was red clinic, the older folks fell for the election trick and believe they could depend on it after the elections, what has happened to it. If Skeritt is so committed to the young people, what has happened to the promised 7500 tablets. It Skeritt is so committed to the education of the young people, the money that is used to pay the salaries of the five big DLP members, why isn’t it used to pay for the 7500 tablets. His priority should have been to the young people, because a promise was made to them during the election campaign, but instead, his commitment is to his Labour Party friends, not to the children of Dominica.

DLP failed our kids when they moved to the American education sysytem. “No child left behind” This was a false premise to make kids and poor parents feel beter about their chances in life. Everything in the U.S is about race so be carefull how you follow their policies.
No educational system on earth beats or can surpass the British Education System.
Before Skerroo came into office, all kids coming from Dominica who enters a classroom in the US was able to score higher than the kids his age in that school. But today our standard have been lowered.
I dont know who sold this idea to Skeritt that we should move to the US system, but it won’t amount to much.

My dear and Honorable Prime Minister has been on the fore-front of the Education Revolution in Dominica for almost a decade and a half. His sincere dedication and love for the Children of his beloved Island-Nation is indeed irrefutable!!! May the Almighty continue to bless our Honorable Prime Minister and grant him long life as he continues to guide our sweet Nature Isle into the first half of this Century!

Yes education is the key, also manufacturing is the key, colleges and universities can be a valuable tool in developing Dominica by helping the country develop products, and teaching the people about manufacturing, exporting instead of importing, the people have the know how but not the tools, this is where the schools come in, also stop charging tuition, our school should be geared to revving up the economy.

Ti shikah are you living in Dominica? The same people that are saying don’t depend on government for jobs are the same people fighting to hold every government positions available. Graduate s are willing to create employment opportunities for themselves, but the economic downturn have created problems to do so. There are a lot of variables you have to take into consideration when venturing into this, examples populations, the services needed etc.

This is the best prime minister we have after the British left. Know one complained when the British were the slave drivers working our parents for nothing that was corruption. Guest paid our parents pennies for a lb of bananas no one said nothing. Work with the prime minister on the production level. Education is very important, help educate the kids to produce not go to Roseau and beg for crumbs. Every body complains and do nothing. Go and raise chicken, and rabbits to export to the french islands.

Skerrit has no authority and in no position to talk or lecture to us Dominicans on the merits or demerits of Education or for education in Dominica. The system in Dominica is corrupt and so is the governance of the administration he heads. It is corrupt and we do not trust you sir,.

As the sitting leader of the country -whether you like or not- Mr. Skerrit has the authority to speak on educational matters of the country. If you keep breaking down, then you will never learn how to build.

Please DNO, allow Views Expressed to listen to Joe Wilson a US Republican Representative in Congress telling Obama he lied.

He is the Prime Minister. He has every right “to inform” the people about this. If you view it as lecture, so be it. Some people need to be lectured to, especially the children. So what is your problem with that?
You have no right to criticize him. In fact, you are downright out of place.
As I have noted, whenever the PM speaks you critics, haters and disrespectful ones must criticize the PM. I am warning you. One day you will pay for your words.

What about sending students to Canada, America England where better education can be obtained? That is commonsense!

What is the point of having hundreds of doctors who claims to be educated in Cuba, they return home to work in a hospital, resulting in more dead people being released from the hospital, than those who’s treatment were successful?

You cannot deny that: because of this knowledge, you and your clones, the people in your cabal, as soon as you have a headache you run out of the island to seek medical treatment in some other country. Why don’t you trust your Cuban doctors? You avoid going to Cuba for treatment, knowing you may go there as a passenger in an aircraft, however, will return to Dominica as cargo in the cargo compartment of an aircraft. The poor and underprivileged are at the mercy and the hands of the incompetent Cuban born doctors, and the Dominican quacks who are trained in Cuba also.

Political, talk and false hope is one thing reality is another!

I disagree with your characterization of trained people. You may have your preferences on where to study but those who did not have the resources embraced an opportunity to expand their knowledge and should not be criticized for doing this. Doctors make inaccurate diagnosis all over the world, sometimes it is subject to litigation so that is not new but to highlight the problems of one particular group of trained people is not only mischievous but dangerous beyond common sense because you are writing like an authority on everything and who can except someone who is self righteous and thinks he or she knows more than everyone else, I am sure there are things you would like to do differently?. If you cannot say something positive, keep quiet because lives have been tranformed, people have progressed, yes there will be limitations but where in the world is everything perfect. Those who benefited have the authority to say something about the Cuban scholarship programme not the detractors

Francisco, you make some outrageous comments. They are unfounded. People die in those countries you mentioned and some from malpractice. When their family sue it is for millions of dollars.
A few years ago, a former T & T Prime Minister went to Cuba for treatment. He is still alive and on his two feet. He appears well.
We should probably state, those whom God deems to live, they will live and vice versa.

It is time for our graduates to start becoming their own bosses by creating their own enterprises. The traditional private sector in Dominica is weak and is incapable of accommodating new more educated workers. Now is the time for our graduates to band together to help themselves and their family. Do not depend on Government. they can only employ a handful of new grads each year.

Our system of governance and the statements of leaders must be compared with their actions. The prime minister by default must support an education programme that is comprehensive but at the same time the system of government that we have is modeled on a divisive policy which is no fault of the leader. Please do not get me wrong, what I am saying that an education policy has a partisan characteristic that is is responds to the ruling elite in the country and until this is broken then our education system will be designed to serve those who have the means of political and economic power. Today the dynamics have change therefore we need an education system that responds to our needs and not our wants, to make people self sufficient and self reliant, not to depend on politicians or the economic class to dictate their future but themselves and unless we can construct that system we will be saying nice things to give the impression that we are doing something. We must redesign and build

    • The Facts
      April 25, 2015

Who is dictating to whom? You are not fair to the PM and do not give him credit due.
You are wrong about the education system, designed to only serve elites and those who have means. Are you suffering from an inferiority complex?
I did not read this on DNO’s articles pertaining to the Prime Minister and his speech, advice to the children, students, “No one left behind.”
I would agree with you if it were in those days; not today. Today, every child has the opportunity to take advantage of the education system.
Every student can charter their course. It depends what they want out of life and how seriously they take an interest in their studies.
First, they must attend school, be diligent in their studies and graduate.
Secondly, after graduating, they should seek a job of their choice according to their qualifications. None should state that they were or are being dictated to. If they feel they were, it is to their benefit. Hope they will be successful.
