POETRY REVIEW: Dear Mother Nature

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was submitted by Paulisha Dennis, a student of The Dominica State College. It was published, unedited, by DNO.

In the beginning of the piece, the speaker has apparently began to engage  mother nature in a conversation, in an attempt to find out why mother nature does the things she does. The speaker continues, stating to mother nature that at times, she is humble, and  at other times she appears to be moody. The speaker also asks questions to mother nature, seeking the reasons for the volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and earthquakes. The poem then switches to another perspective-mother nature’s. Mother nature takes over and begins by stating how things were, and how they’ve changed. She explains that the rain is simply her tears, the earthquakes are to reshape her misplaced body, the volcanic eruptions are to purify the land,  the  hurricanes are to show that she still reigns, and finally she explains that the wind only gets so strong when what’s happening becomes too much to handle.

Throughout the poem imagery is used beautifully, painting an image of what is going and what the characters in the piece are talking about. It also serves to establish the theme of nature in the piece. The piece is written in rhyme, causing the reader to become captivated immediately. The use of both a human being, and mother nature, was an excellent move by the writer, as it allows the reader to view things from both perspectives. The use of alliteration in lines such as, “That forceful strike that I send so strong” was also an effective move by the writer as it helps create the rhythmic beat of the poem. The audience can well relate to this poem, as questions that were asked are questions, that people of this nation, would really like to know the answers to.  However, more effort could’ve been placed on punctuation, and mother nature’s perspective, seems as if it was rushed into, with no break, between the first speaker’s perspective and mother nature’s.Also The reasons behind mother nature’s action seems to be vague, mother naturestates thatBabylon has shown her no respect, and has stated that our science has corrupted her so, but gives no details as to how she is disrespected by Babylon and how our science has corrupted her.

  1. First of all I am person who believes in a Supreme Creator; there is nothing and no one above Him–His name is Jehovah God–Eternal Spirit of Life in Love and Holiness .

Genesis 1: 1-3 tells us that at t he beginning the Earth was barren (meaning unproductive), formless and void, and it was covered with darkness–as deep as it could go; until God called for Life, with just 4 simple words which was: “Let there be Light” and so it happened–this Light represents the nature of Love–the Life which He gives to mankind, by their faith.

God,, the Lord, would continue to call for Life to the barren Earth by His Word of Mouth–I do not want to get you lost with more details, but there is a lot more to it than that.

Hence that Mother Nature concept of man is the first part of God’s Creation–without His she would not be in existence–I am saying that without God’s call for Life the Earth would be still be barren, without form and covered by darkness.

    • Mother Nature represents the Physical Nature of God Almighty, in all His glory.

It is through that physical body that God causes His Ways–all in all– to manifest before or through the human sense of mankind–the see, hear, feel, taste, and smell–that is why they are referred to as our natural senses; and without the Spirit of God–the Life of Love in us, we are known as the natural man.

God’s ways is perceived by man all in all, through His Love (everything good, peaceful, and perfect ) and through His wrath (the display of His anger against the wicked, evil, and sinful practices of mankind.

Mankind as one with the concept of Mother Nature–there is no difference; in fact man was given the authority to dominate–this means that God put man above all the rest of His creation–but He never gave man full authority; God remains in Supreme control–regardless of whatever the situation is at any given time.

    • “The reasons behind mother nature’s action seems to be vague, mother nature states that Babylon has shown her no respect”–News article

Whether she knows it or not the writer has tried to express or illustrate the conflicts between God–the Supreme Creator and Sustainer– (her Mother Nature concept) and the World, who are the people walking their own ways without God and under the sole control of their human or natural senses (her Babylon concept )

But no man can understand and to define God’s Ways unless He authorizes them to do so. That is the reason for her vague illustrations of the work of her Mother Natures actions and the lack of respect from her Babylon

What she claims to be disrespect of Babylon represents the disobedience (the sinfulness, wickedness, the strife, and vile, discord and disdain) which are the habits of the world (her Babylon in question)

      • That writer has written about JEHOVAH GOD, our Supreme Creator and Commander in Life, whom she refers to as MOTHER NATURE.

BABYLON is the PEOPLE, known as the WORLD, says GOD’s WORD.

There is nothing about Nature, which can be produced and manifested by its own force; the force behind them is very much a PERSON in all His glory.

Jesus, the Son of God of the Bible is that Person of God Almighty, Eternal Spirit, the Christ of Love.

That is why the apostle John spoke about Him, as THE WORD OF THE BEG8INNING;, and without that Word, there could have been no creation.

In other words, Jesus, the Son, is the “Supernatural” Being of the God of Spirit; He said to us: “Before Abraham was, I AM!

“You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” from Peter is the most famous testimony of the New Testament.

Jesus is Christ, the Eternal Person of Life in Love–He has full control of man’s existence and the rest of creation, which man calls MOTHER NATURE

To begin, I suggest that DNO give a direct link to Jahniah’s poem as many of us may have missed it when it appeared four years ago.

That said, both the poem and Paulisha’s review reflect the valuable creative talent that lies dormant within many Dominicans. The review pulls no punches in highlighting the poem’s strengths and weaknesses. And this is exactly what a critique should do: both for the benefit of the poet and the public.

In many of my DNO comments I harp on about creativity. But at the end of the day it is what Dominica so desperately needs, both in the arts and life in general. Thank you Jahniah and Paulisha for giving us hope.
