A 20-year-old from Pottersville is the recipient of a scholarship compliments the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) Team Dominica.

Lyndon Auguiste, who is also one of the leading members of the party, will leave the island on Wednesday for Cuba to pursue a six-year education in medicine.

An elated Auguiste told a UWP press briefing on Tuesday morning that the scholarship came as a surprise to him.

“I didn’t know I was going to receive that scholarship, even in spite of the hard work that I have done within this party,” he said.

He noted that the medical industry is very important to him as an aspiring medical profession and, “It has been something that is of deep concern even in terms of the cost of many operations and the cost of many medications in our medical industry.”

As part of the scholarship agreement Auguiste must return to Dominica to serve the country after receiving his general degree.

“When I come back I want to work effortlessly to ensure that Dominica can get the best of my ability. I really want to see our health care industry be of first class, something that people would want to come to Dominica to take part in…,”he said.

According to him, “There are a lot of rocky roads in achieving what it is that I have gotten today…”

Auguiste had a message for other young people. “If you keep believing in yourself and you keep holding strong and you maintain your faith, you will succeed,” he said.

He thanked the UWP, as well as the Cuban Ambassador, Juana Elena Ramos, who he said demonstrated to him what it is to work “without fear, favor, affection or ill will.”

He also thanked the Ministry of Education for his achievements and Dominicans in general for their prayers and blessings.

Meanwhile, Former Education Minister and UWP candidate for the La Plaine constituency, Ron Green stated that Dominica has been the beneficiary of a very strong tradition of support from Cuba over many years, especially in the field of education.

“Many of our top professionals in Dominica, in education, in medicine, health, in civil engineering, in accounting, in economics, many of them studied in Cuba and now contributing in the development process of the country,” he remarked.

Green further stated that, over the last five years, the quota of scholarships granted by the Cuban government to the UWP has been one every year.

“Right now fifty or so Dominicans are in Cuba at this moment studying in various levels…some of them are in year two or three or in their final year,” he explained.

Green said the UWP is pleased to offer the scholarship to Auguiste.

“We are very pleased, he is an outstanding young man and I am sure he will spend the next six years wisely and when he does return to Dominica, all of us here will be the full medical beneficiaries of his expertise,” he said.

    The recipients are;

I am confused too, this time by your confusion. The Cuban government is always the one granting the scholarships, even when Rosie Douglas was doing it. Different people/organizations can make requests and the ambassador can allow the organization to select the recipient is they are confident that a fair criteria will be used. I hope you are further confused.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne wants Antigua be the Caribbean’s version of Singapore, why can’t Dominica get a prime minister with such ambition? Why are cursed with leaders who keep us poor? They want Antigua to be an economic powerhouse in the Caribbean, u ever hear skerrit or Linton say that?

Politics aside for now, work hard young man and remember to pay it forward when you can.

    Dear Young People of Dominica,

Many of you may not know it, but contrary to the impression being given, it was the United Workers Party which in 1996, established Diplomatic relations between Dominica and Cuba.

In fact it was under the United Workers Party that Dominicans got the most scholarships to study in Cuba. When UWP ,was voted out of office in Jan. 2000, there were over 300 Dominican students studying in Cuba. Today there are barely 50.
In fact, in 2003, three years after UWP left office, from the students sent to study by UWP, Dominica had the largest number of Medical Doctors in its history to ever graduate at one time.
In 2003, Twenty seven (27) Dominicans graduated from Cuba as medical Doctors .
The Labour Party said that UWP was mad to train so many Doctors.
Labour failed to continue the UWP training program for medical doctors, and today, Dominica is short of Doctors, and has to depend on importing Doctors from overseas, to care for our sick.

Fellow Dominicans, you can see for yourselves, that UWP is a government with foresight, and a plan to rebuild the health services of Dominica.
UWP will train more Doctors, and more nurses, and rebuild the Health Services of Dominica.
Congratulations to young Lyndon. We wish you every sucess in your studies.

Congrats Mr. Green. The contribution of the UWP to Education is evident in every profession today. That is in addition to the MAJOR strides made in laying the foundation for universal secondary education…That includes the construction of Grand Bay Secondary, North East Comprehensive, Castle Bruce Secondary and major repairs to PSS….All that was done in 4 and a half years, almost a quarter of the reign of Labour.
.A SIGN OF THE GOOD THINGS TO COME WHEN TEAM DOMINICA IS ELECTED TO OFFICE..

    August 26, 2014

Ok, a key supporter of the UWP got a scholarship to Cuba from the UWP. That’s Great. Ok, if the same news was said of a Labourite receiving scolarship from the Labour party, would it not be a big issue by supporters of the UWP? namely DS, Sherly and Dominica Politics. Hope you all realise that there are two sides to a coin. Let progress continue.

    • DA Progress
      August 28, 2014

The big issue is seeking Change to a policy and practice that allowed the DLP who received at least 5 scholarships per year as “Government” to allocate these almost exclusively to labourites, that is at least 70 scholarships in 14 years. This is a side of the coin you may not be aware of …so let our progress continue but in the direction of balance so those who truly merit the scholarships do in fact get them. There is certainly no concern about that merit issue regarding Mr Auguiste. Work hard, Focus, Make DA proud my Brother.

Cuba is one country which practices real respect for sovereignty of other countries.
Can China and Venzuela demonstrate this level of maturity and recognize the role of government and opposition in our democracy ?
Respect to you Cuba, you have been a true friend to Dominica and other third world countries.

Awa Mr. Green not 50, check it again, 1 every 5 years your maximum is 5 and not 50………….

      August 26, 2014

50 scholars was a reference to the extent that Cuba has assisted Dominica; not UWP per say. At face value, he bungles up the credit; politics at its best!

    • my brother
      August 26, 2014

If you read carefully you will see 50 Dominicans not 50 UWP Scholars… u are right 5 UWP Scholars over the last 5 years but 45 or so other Dominicans are there studying…seems u were searching for something negative. Remember criticism is always positive …because someone took the time to analyze something and point out what he/she felt was the weakness, or how it could be stronger. Isnt that always useful??

  24. August 26, 2014

      The saw for sure!

    • Chow Mien
      August 27, 2014

For your information, the UWP government was the first Dominican government to officially establish diplomatic relations with Cuba. At that time even Rosie Douglas(of blessed memory) quixotically stated on DBS Radio, that it was not a politically astute move. Prior to this, only a minority of Caricom members had diplomatic relations with Cuba, and UWP leadership open the flood gates for the the eventual total and unequivocal embracing of Cuba by Caricom.
During that period Dominica had the highest amount of student per capita studying in Cuba. UWP sent more students to Cuba in one year than Skeritt send all over the world. So do your research before coming in the public sphere to parade your ignorance
