Various preschools on island celebrated the pumpkin on Monday as it was chosen as part of the activities set aside for ‘Early Childhood Month’ observed in November.
Students of the Bright Beginning Centre, S.P.I.C.E.S Centre, St Alphonsus Pre-School, T.C Sunbeam Preschool, among other early childhood institutions displayed creative pumpkin dishes; including pumpkin cake, pumpkin juice, pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, pumpkin ackra, pumpkin fudge and pumpkin art in different forms.
“Today we have all our pumpkin creations on display today, we call it our Pumpkin Festival Day,” Principal of the Bright Beginning Centre, Joycelyn Graham- Laronde told Dominica News Online (DNO) during a visit to the institution. “We are doing everything with the pumpkin today, so the parents and the children did their creation at home where the children had to help the parents to create whatever it is that they wanted to do.”
She continued, “Last year we dealt with the coconut where we had ‘Coconut Day’ and this year we are having Pumpkin Day.”
Graham-Laronde indicated that the theme for Early Childhood Month is, “Rebuilding Dominica Together Beginning with Early Childhood”.
“Under this theme we are doing everything that we can to rebuild Dominica and one of them is to use the pumpkin and have the children to create certain things with the pumpkin,” she stated.
She commended the parents of the BBC on a job well done in assisting students for the day.
“The parents really did a very good job for us here at Bright Beginnings Centre and we have a good display of the pumpkin this morning,” Graham-Laronde noted. “I am very satisfied, they really contribute to whatever it is we are doing at the centre, it was well done we appreciate it very much.”
Meantime; Public Relations Officer (PRO) of S.P.I.C.E.S Centre, Charis Daniel said the students in that learning institution will learn that pumpkin is not a vegetable, “but it is a fruit.”
There were also various pumpkin dishes on display and students were dressed in pumpkin suits.
“Here in S.P.I.C.E.S centre we have decorated our school in pumpkin. The children all wear the same pumpkin suit they eat pumpkin throughout the day, they taste different foods made of pumpkins,” she indicated.
