Primary school in St. Joseph gets new name

new school namesStudents of St Joseph Primary School will be participating in independence celebration bearing a new name: the Kelleb John Laurent Primary School.

The school unveiled its new name at a ceremony on the school premises on Wednesday evening.

Parliamentary Representative of the St Joseph constituency, Kelvar Darroux, told the students that Kelleb Laurent was an astute gentleman who offered his time and talents selflessly.

“He was one who would volunteer his time and services free of charge and I recall quite clearly the efforts that he put in, in establishing the St Joseph steel orchestra in procuring the steel pan and ensuring that the young people of this community could come together and generate their skills and talents towards steel pan playing,” he said.

Darroux added that Laurent also played a significant role in education and announced that in his honor he would be implementing the Kelleb John Laurent scholarship to two students.

“Due to the fact that Mr Laurent was an educator and due to the passion that I have for education and to see our young men and women do well in this community as a member of Parliament, I take the great privilege and honor to announce here this afternoon that I will be making a scholarship available to a young boy and a young girl of this school taking effect from next year September in the amount of $500,” he stated.

The parliamentary representative made a call to past students of the school saying they should make an effort to give back to their school.

Meanwhile, friend of Kelleb Laurent, Ambrose Sylvester described him as one who lived a service oriented life dedicated to serve humanity.

“His service was rendered in the face of adversity and antagonism and on occasions service was rendered under extremely difficult conditions yet with humility Kelleb Laurent a devout Roman Catholic saw this as a vocation from the creator, equipped himself with morality, integrity and continued to play his part to mankind,” he stated.

Laurent was also described as an enthusiastic sportsman who loved cricket. He was a former politician, teacher and principal.

Nothing is said about Laurent’s wife, who is standing tall in the photo. You see, she is a born-again Christian; walking tall in Jesus. Instead, we read what Ambrose Sylvester said about Laurent being a Catholic. We all know how “devout” Kaleb was as a Catholic.

I applaud the initiative but why do we always wait on when a person die to give them their flowers :?:

Excellent initiative here. Let’s continue to honor those who have served honorably. Mr Laurent was a man par excellente. We all knew him as a man of tremendous humility and ever ready to give of himself in service.

This naming is nothing new. Marigot has WS stevens, la Plaine has Jones Beupierre and both were named during the UWP, so why is it a problem now for St. Joe. We should appreciate when our people who served well get recognized. Castle Bruce my Pawen Rome was never a teacher, so they could name the irrigation system after him.

A dedicated national who utilized his time to assist his people was honored and this is what you have to state? At least, offer appreciation and thanks.
Cease placing God’s name in your disobedience and rebelliousness. He is not pleased for you are not using his Name with holiness and love. You know His Second Commandment is, “Thou Shalt Not Take The Name of The Lord Thy God in Vain.”
It is a mortal/grievous sin to use his Name in that context which you meant. God is taking note of all what we do and say. You will not be exempt.

I respect Mr. Kalleb Laurent and he truly deserves all the flowers and honors he now getting. One thing that is very clear is, Kelvar Darroux and his DLP gang, by a very large margin, represents the opposite of everything Mr. Laurent represented. For example, we all knew the man to be honest, hardworking, and a unifier of the people. This DLP team is the opposite of honesty, a very poor example for young persons to follow, very last, and a divider of the people. Furthermore, in the days of Mr. Kalleb Laurent, St Joseph was one of the most advanced villages in terms of sports including some of the best cricketers to have played for the island, in terms of music as Grammax and some other local bands were all over promoting Dominica and also in terms of agriculture. Today under Mr. Darroux and his DLP gang… St. Joe has officially become one of the poorest villages in Dominica as Kelvar and his DLP succeeded in killing agriculture, killing cricket / football, killing music and killing the community spirit that once existed in St. Joe city.
Now the man is all but out of the cabinet he coming back to his forsaken politrix and promising to give scholarship in the tune of $500.00, oh but next September by which time he and his cabal will be out of power. boy all you time expired long time ago and even if you all promise to give us a bouncing ball that can bounce to the kitchen and the toilete, we still will vote you out.

When will you cease your accusation, judgment and condemnation? You can never see the good which this Labor Party is doing.
Can you not, in a loving manner, appreciate what the gentleman did, recognize him for it and get on with your life?
Then do something to assist the people of St. Joseph. Less criticism, if none at all and more constructive assistance and work.
If you are Santa, what are you doing for Dominica and what plans you have in mind to make it a better, happier and peaceful place to live?

In your reasoning you associate poverty with being backward or wealth. Remember, he was borne in a stable. Poverty is not a crime. Dominica is ranked as the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Therefore, that makes you poor too! I am presently living in one of the richest country in the world, but I would not trade my place of birth ST. JOSEPH DOMINICA for no amount of wealth or money. Get off that bias stigma and help the people of St. Joseph or zip it up. I am doing my share in improving the lives of the less fortunate.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well it’s very nice to see that we are naming a school in the name of a citizen who contributed to our people. I say re-name all the street/roads in Dominica for our citizens who contribute in the development of our country and our people.

This guys will stop at nothing to keep a veil over the eyes of the people. For this new development I say a resounding THANK YOU Ms. MONELL WILLIAMS for if you had not declared your interest, and we that people of the St. Joseph constituency did not pledge our unwavering support to you then we would see none of these latest developments.

Just last week Prime Minister Roosevelt gave a cheque and that has not worked, so now they are exploiting the good name of Mr. Kelleb John Laurant to retain some votes. You know how long ago the man passed and how long now we have had a elected representative?, yet they did not see the need to do this but all of a sudden they remember the man.

This is just my former party’s way of trying to dazzle the eyes of the electorate as if we do not yet know how they operate. Kelver Darroux et al, go to hell, go to hell for it is none of our damn business what school you build, name or rename because what you have done is kept us poor and unempowered and you’ll soon be asking us to vote you again but this time we are resolute and will say no to you and the remaining cabalist come election day. well thank you.

@not this time, you all should embrace whatever is given by this Administration while you are getting them because YOUR LIFE UNDER THE RULING OF THE UWP WILL BE EASIER. Easier because THEY, the UWP, will NOT have to WORK, EVERYTHING will ALREADY be available. SKERRIT is making things easy and convenient for LENNOX, what MORE do YOU ALL want?

      APPRECIATE!

Good going St. Joe. It was about time Laurent got recognized for his selfless contribution in giving back to St. Joe. Many times he was faced with resistance and criticism and many did not understand his humility, honor and passion for his people and community. Laurent was a man of integrity who inspired many through motivation and love. I’m sure St. Joe is proud to honor one of her own, once again!

People have used the plight of the elderly and down trodden and turn it into a political circus for political gain. Do you even think the people who are receiving hand out are living in deplorable conditions. Yet we tend to overlook the rational and render negative and derogative innuendos. Mr. Darroux you just can’t stop the haters.
