Principals of the two schools that received top places in this year’s Grade Six National Assessment have expressed great excitement at the achievement of their students.
Two Students from the Pioneer Preparatory School receive the top two spots, while three students from Petite Savanne Primary School occupied the rest of the top five positions in the examinations, according to results released earlier this week.
Principal of the Pioneer Preparatory School, Esther Robinson told Dominica News Online on Tuesday that she is very proud and, “nothing is better than hard work.”
Mallet P Marie from the school placed first while Adam Thomas placed second.
“If you are persistent, you surely will achieve your goals,” she noted.
She described the learning institution as one where students work hard.
“At every grade level we try to bring the children up to the level that they want them to be and then we have an open door to parents,” Robinson explained.
Additionally she revealed, “Parents are expected to be involved, so with that combination of parent push and school push, the children get a sense that they need to work hard, they need to achieve their best and I think what we are seeing today is just the result of that.”
Meantime Principal of the Petite Savanne Primary School, Oliver Samuel, was equally elated by his school’s performance.
Hallie Francis, Samine Darroux and Sherdina Antoine from the school placed third, fourth and fifth respectively.
“It is a feeling of elation yet satisfaction because we have been working consistently and it is no big surprise… we expected some top scholarships this year,” he said.
He added that he did not expect any of his students to be among the top five students but they have “consistently been competitive and been working hard from Pre-K to this level.”
“So we expected something good out of them and they have just lived up to the expectation. I am happy about that,” Samuel noted.
He said the school has programs in place to help the students excel and students have even topped the entire island in the past.
Samuel pointed out that the school’s success is testament that Primary schools in the rural areas have the ability to do well.
“For the school it is important because normally you would find that people would believe that country schools are not really performing at the top level and not much recognition is given to that but we have been performing at the top level in the school and it is not the first time,” he said.
yeah, This is where DNO can stand up among the rest by not just simply stating some on the facts and the same thing as everybody else, but in addition do some indepth analysis, comparisons between schools, years, geographic locations, boys vs girls etc. Because all the media houses usually say the same things, same quotations, same everything.
We would love that. If this could be done starting this year rather than waiting for another year. That would be nice. This is what I was getting at – had no intention of being negative.
Ginger that is a great comment. Also, bear in mind that analytics can’t be done overnight. This is what some people do as a career. Once the data is available a lot can be done like statistical analysis and even predictions. But suffice to say some simple analysis accompanied with graphs would give a clearer picture. Check out the blog http://www.vanaudelanalytix.com for some examples.
Indeed it is a joy to celebrate the excellent performance of some schools but it is a shame for many other schools. And i strongly second and third the opinion that some principals and teachers should be embarrassed. The Ministry of Education should now see it fitting to rotate many of teachers in the South East, South and Western districts. Some teachers clearly should remain at grade k level where they belong. And not even K because that is where the base of education begins. Hoping to see some changes this school year. Transfer, transfer, transfer.
They should especially in the south (grand bay) too many children got 4 e
Marvellous work Teacher Oliver. Excellent results which confirm your high standards set for the students . Keep up the good work!
DNO we need a careful analysis of the results. while Pioneer Prep and Petite Savanne most be complimented highly. The results reflect some embarrassing news for some other schools. Case in point Grand bay a large school in Dominica got only one Bursary and no scholarships. Kindly ask the Ministry of Education for their internal analysis if not do it yourself. The schools on the west coast, those on the East and those on the South East are performing terribly. The 2015 G6NA results reflects a sorry picture of the State of Education in Dominica
I am happy to hear that you are asking for additional analysis. This is very important. I am a computer programmer and I did some analysis for the 2014 exam at http://www.vanaudelanalytix.com using the data I could find . I would love to do some in depth data analysis of the current exam but the data is private. We need to look at perfomance by gender, schools and subjects so that we can better understand how our students are really performing.
You have to consider class size, these school are very small find out the size of the grade six. If its a handful it will be easier to achieve success all factors considered.
congratulations to the Students ,teachers and parents of the G6NA. Not surprised about the top performers. Check the performance records of the Principal and teachers . Congrats Sambo And Ms Robinson.
Are there other performers at the schools. Everyone only mentions the top performers. What about the other students? How many students sat the examinations at those schools and what were the results like?
I am pretty certain there are other students who did their very best although they may not have gotten scholarships.
Come on principles, at least do not ignore the other students of your school. Mention something so they too can have a sense of achievement.
Principles, I fail you
If you want to know the results why don’t you ask DNO? How come it’s the principals you blaming? Some people are just hell bent on being negative.
Pioneer Prep sent 16 students for the G6NA – They got 7 Scholarships including Number 1 and 2 and they got 3 bursaries and 6 very high passes. Hope this helps. An exceptional school where children are given a well rounded education, not just academics. Congratulations Miss Robinson. Well done Mr. Samuel. You are two very hardworking and outstanding principals. Keep up the good work.
Congrats to all the top 5 successful students, to all the students who received scholarships and Bursaries and of course the teachers, Principals, families and others who played a part in the students success.. I ditto the comments made by the Principal of the Petite Savanne Primary. Remember Ti Savanne, your students contributed to the book Playing With Plants in The Nature Isle. So remember all work and no play make Jack and Jill dull children.
Well done teacher oliver…and its apparent that this success is 80% your credit…starting from ludat primary to belvue\pichlen primary and finally reforming the.petite savanne primary school…congratulations for a job well done
Amen!!
Country schools do indeed perform well ! Both primary and secondary and we will continue to excel! BOOOM! Good things come from the South!!
Only country school doing well is Petite Savanne. Go investigate the results
Petite Savanne is NOT the only country school that’s doing well..
Excuse yourself, why don’t YOU yourself investigate the other country schools and their performances besides the Common Entrance results?? Hmm
No its not, if a school has five students in an exam and all five pass that’s 100% so that school will be recognized as having 100% pass. However there are schools that have 25 or more students doing the exam with 15-20 of them passing high but they will not be recognized as doing well because they did not get 100% pass even if they have just one fail. That’s is not fair but that’s the way it is.
