Dominica State College (DSC) students now have the proper environment to conduct research and do academic work at the technical wing of the school thanks to Create Caribbean Inc., a research institute.

The institute was officially opened on Thursday, 9th April, 2015.

It is the brainchild of Mahaut-born, Founder and Director Dr. Shuyler K Esprit.

The institute is described as “a non-profit education focused organization that supports students and scholars in academic research, teaching and learning, with an emphasis on using digital technologies.”

“You may not be able to tell by looking at me right now, but this is a very important day for me, a very special day,” Esprit who is a lecturer at the college, said at the launch. “My students have already been using my research institute and have found it valuable in their lives and have already found it a place where they can learn and grow.”

She continued, “One of the things that I want to do here with Create Caribbean is not just about research but to create academic support by providing a home environment. If students can feel that they have a home that they have someone all the time to talk to then it is more likely that they can stay there and finish their work and as questions and get more interested in other things.”

Officials from the Dominica State College and the Ministry of Education and Technology have embraced the idea wholeheartedly saying that there are several benefits to having a research institute at the college.

Esprit is a scholar of Caribbean literature and cultural studies and holds a PhD in English literature from University of Maryland – College Park.

She has taught and held professional positions at a number of universities in the United States and is currently completing her book manuscript and its digital companion, both entitled “Occasions for Caribbean,,” a historical exploration of the reading culture in the Caribbean.

She is also the Editorial Consultant for “The Chronicle,” a writer for regional magazines and the Chairperson of the organizing committee for the Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair (NILFBF).

It’s a RESEARCH centre using digital tools and encouraging technology, not an IT centre. Also, you can use google to find out her background.

So where does that put the Colleges’ library and its facilities then? Is this done in partnership with the library, or is this a duplication of resources. It would be nice if there were some sought of connection.

    • Duhhhh
      April 10, 2015

This would be an additional resource. No duplication here. Go to their website for more information because I don’t think you completely understand the role of CREATE. http://createcaribbean.org/create/
