Salybia Primary School holds literacy march

Salybia Primary School students on literacy march

The Salybia Primary School is on a drive to raise awareness of the importance of reading in the Carib Territory.

With that in mind the staff, students, parents, as well as preschoolers of the Isulukati Preschool took to the streets this morning in a solidarity march to promote reading.

The theme for today’s march is “Reading Today for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Along the way those who participate in the march were met by the Carib Chief who gave a solidarity message. The Member of Parliament later showed up at the school where he gave support to the students, teachers and parents.

The students were accompanied by community members who turned out in large numbers carrying placards and chanting loudly on the streets of the Carib Territory.

CONGRATES TO THE STAFF AND STUDENTS OF THE BOTH SCHOOLS WHO SHOWED UP. HOWEVER OUR LEADERS MUST BE LEADERS NOT ONLY ON PAPER BUT PHYSICALLY. THAT PARL-REP MUST STEP UP. TWO MAJOR ERRORS IN ONE MONTH. FAILING TO INFORM THE PM ON THE CONDITIONS OF THE ROADS AND NOW TURNING HIS BACK ON THE YOUTHS. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

Shouldn’t it have been a literacy read instead of march? Why March about reading? Where are the books? After the children returned home, they had no material to read from, back to square 1…..SMDH

This is the kind of news I like coming out of Domnica. Not the constant political bickering we hear non-stp on the airwaves.

My faith in our people is really being taken to higher heights.

    Great job

Congrats to the salybia primary school on this…it was a great match..However, I wish to add that only the carib chief was present besides the students, parents and teachers…There were no other community leaders to address the children..Our leaders need to realize that they are the role model to our children and they must step up. If you are unable to attend a function, just say so, rather than giving the impression that you will and you know that you wont..If you say you cant, no one will beat on you..mr graneau got there after everything was concluded. Shame! mr graneau, you need to show some concern. Our children don’t even know who you are. To the entire salybia school body, thumbs up! Don’t let the worthless heads in the community break you down..Keep up the good work!

        kalinago impress

i commended the school on what they did this morning. i am a parent and i was present..but it is rather interesting that the news reached DNO with information that isnt true..i do not know what their problems were that is why they were not there, but as far as i know, it was said at a PTA meeting that they would, and they werent..now if they were EXPECTED to be there and they WERENT..fine..but why is DNO saying that they were there?.

“”The theme for today’s march is “Reading Today for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Along the way those who participate in the march were met by the Carib Chief, Member of Parliament and other community leaders who gave solidarity messages.””

who gave solidarity messages…they were not there so how they gave the messages kalinago impress?i would like to know.

i see no point in giving the leaders credit when they dont deserve it..i left the school after this was over, and i met mr graneau about 6 mins walk away from the school..and i know of other circumstances were he was expected to address the people of the community and never show up at all.

I’m glad this is happening, but I always wonder how helpful these marches are. Ideally, it will raise “awareness,” but will people make the next step and pick up a book? Reading is so important; I hope every participant in the march is given complementary books.

A start is always good. Leadership would demand someone rallies the troops to mak it a reality. I remember being part of a group who taught people to read. It was very successful. We had to convince people it was better to learn to read, and there was nothing to be ashamed of not being able to read, than to be afraid of what others would say. We also got our people to understand that it was not cool to make fn of the people we were trying to reach.
