Some 16 students from Dominica have advanced to the next stage in Shotokan Karate.
Shotokan is a style of karate which was developed from various martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957) and his son Gigo (Yoshitaka) Funakoshi (1906–1945).
Chief Instructor for Dominica Shotokan Karate Association (DSKA), Winston Magloire, told Dominica News Online that the grading exam was done to coincide with a visit from the Chief Instructor of the International Karate Diagaku University (IKD), Master Frank Woon-A-T-ai.
IKD It is located in Canada.
“What he does from time to time, at least on an annual basis, is to visit all of the clubs in the respective countries and in this case he was coming to the Caribbean and he was able to visit us here in Dominica and we took the opportunity to do our grading exams for students and some training with him,” he explained.
All who took part received certificates and belts ranging from white, yellow, orange, blue and purple.
There are three levels of brown belts and nine levels of black belts.
He added that it is important to grade students to find out how well students are doing and if they have progressed successfully to the next level.
“What we do in class all along is what you get graded on. So there are no surprises really,” Magloire said.
He said Karate is a learning process which keeps one fit, builds one’s self-confidence, discipline, respect, improve well-being, learning some self-defenses at the same time while learning the martial arts.
so we hav two martial arts schools on island hmmm so can we hav a purple dragon vs shotokan tournament ?
Should be taught in schools as a form of self-defense and discipline for the children
Very good news for these students…Loving the vibes and I would hope that you guys keep training.
