Sixth Annual Dame Eugenia Charles Distinguished Public Lecture carded for November 24

Tennyson S. D. Joseph

The University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica is pleased to announce the Sixth Annual Dame Eugenia Charles Distinguished Public Lecture as part of the Dame Eugenia Charles Distinguished Lecture Series to be delivered by Dr. Tennyson S. D. Joseph, St. Lucian by birth, and Lecturer in Political Science at The University of the West Indies at Cave Hill Campus, Barbados.

The Lecture will take place on Thursday, November 24, 2011 commencing at 7:30 pm at the Conference Room of the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica. Dr. Joseph will address the subject “Neo-liberalism, Primitive Accumulation and Generational Decline: The Crisis of Political Leadership in the Caribbean.”

He has the Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from Wolfson College, University of Cambridge; the M.Phil in Political Science from The University of the West Indies; and the BA in History and Political Science, also from The University of the West Indies.

Dr. Joseph is a Political Scientist and can be considered one of the University of the West Indies’ quickly rising academics. In an age where academics are criticized, sometimes unfairly, for not “participating” in the social change process, Dr. Joseph stands out as a shining example of what an academic ought to be, setting his views boldly in the context of research, scholarship and an abiding consciousness of the role that social scientists at the University of the West Indies must play within the West Indian society.

He has written several articles in refereed journals, contributed to book chapters as well as authored and co-authored books on the subjects of colonialism, decolonization, elections, and other relevant topics in political science.

The public lecture series, among other aims, seeks to keep alive the memory of a National Hero of First Rate and reminds the Dominica population at home and abroad of Dominica’s remarkable potential in having produced a citizen who was able to hold her own on the world stage and gain the respect of all, which translated into the indisputable meteoric rise to prominence of a 291 square miles island in the Caribbean, previously little-known. The Lecture Series is not meant to romanticize or venerate Dame Eugenia; rather, it is meant to reflect on the influence, ideas and life of a prominent Dominican citizen and link the foregoing with contemporary political, social and economic issues.

His Excellency the Acting President Dr. Edward I. Watty will be in attendance

how come she did not build an international airport when she had all that fame for the grenada crisis, she should have lobby’d while in washington, instead she killed a stadium in progress and build little airport, which almost took her life, her own brain child.

perfect timing, just when we discussing eugenia’s famous inhuman dread act, this PHDian is going to attemp to through in our faces, how heroic she was, well here is the down side to this glorious achievement,we were the ones who experience the evil that was eugenia charles,we do need not an exclusive recognition award holder to try and thrust that down our throats,we are graduates of the streets, the inhuman acts of that law which eugenia is responsible for implementing,is embeded in our history and our soil, bloodied soil, the parents of the poor people children still moan their lost, she most be turning and twisting in her grave, wishing she had gotten forgiveness, for her ill advised implementing of a dictatorial law, given trigger happy country boys police,to shoot on sight human beings, without justification, without their given day in court to prove if they were guilty or innocent of terrorizing people that was not policing, that was murder,so this PHDian i am hoping that he is going to showcase the good and ill sides of mary eugenia charles in his promotion.

what gives any government the right to take away the rights of it citizens,by implementing a law,a law by which you are guilty before proven guilty,or that peter should pay for paul,or that the police should shoot on sight, you are asking or making reference to an agreement, with human life, now a days you can not even tie a dog your yard, you got to have an open enclosure,so that animal can run around freely, because of animal rights,a police oath is to protect and serve, apprehend and take you before the courts, were you will be tried before a magistrate, the persons who triggerd that law,was leroy ettiene and his band, that is who the police should have had gone after, not everyone you see with a dam natty hair, this was dam dark age in dominica, that what i say,and all who do not like it,fire will burn you all hypocrites.
