UPDATE: Al Parillon among top CSEC exams

Parillon topped the exam results
Parillon topped the exam results

A student of the St. Mary’s Academy, Al Parillon, is among the top performer in the CSEC exams in results released on Friday morning.

He received 11 ones and two twos.

Following closely behind are Kaele Benjamin, Tiffany Johnson and Tojya Vital of the Convent High School, who obtained ten one’s.

Speaking to the press after results were announced, Parilon, 17, who is from Fond Cole, said that when he heard the news he was astonished.

“My immediate reaction was I was astonished,” he said. “I did well, I did very well. But I didn’t do as I wanted. I wanted to get 13 ones at first but 11 ones and 2 twos are generally a great result.”

He described preparations for the exams as “tough.”

“The preparation was tough for me,” he stated. “It included a lot of sacrifices, for example dropping karate. I was originally in karate and football at the same time. I had to drop them to attend other classes. My studying time I had to increase them, and it includes some sleepless nights where I had to do certain projects and assignments.”

Parillon also mentioned that he received a lot of support from his family, friends and “everybody.”

He did business subjects with sciences and his favorite subjects include mathematics, accounts, Spanish and information technology.

“I have a real passion when it comes to those subjects,” he noted, and mentioned that he is looking forward to becoming a software engineer, specializing in operating systems.

He also has some advice for other students.

“Based on my success, I would like to give the message to upcoming students that they have to put the preparation in, they have to be determined,” Parillon said. “If you want to get your grades and good result you have to put the time in you have to put the sacrifice in and you will reap success, I guarantee it.”

Another top performer, Kaele L Benjamin of the Convent High School, said she is happy because of the results.

Benjamin, who is the daughter of psychiatrist Dr. Griffin Benjamin, said that she too had to work long hours to make it to the top.

“I worked very hard and for me there were nights when you had to stay up and put in work. Even mornings I had to wake up at 6:00 am and during the Easter holidays I had to wake up to prepare,” she noted.

She said her family was very supportive.

Other top performer were Lou-Ann Lawrence of the Castle Bruce Secondary who received 9 ones and three two’s, Munirih V Marie of the Convent High School and Devon Malcom Brewster of the Portsmouth Secondary School  who received 9 ones and 2 two’s.

Paloma K B St. Jean of the Convent High School and Benjamin Pascal of the Dominica Grammar School received nine ones and one two.

There were 38 students who were top performers and out of that 18 students the Convent High School captured top grades of six ones and above.

The schools which had top performers are: the Castle Bruce Secondary school, 3; St Mary’s Academy; 3, Portsmouth Secondary; 2, the Dominica Grammar School; 3, the Seventh Day Adventist, 3.

The overall pass rate was 76.1 percent compared to 74.6 percetn last year.

CXC Registrar Catherine Daniel noted that the student with the most one is not necessarily the top performer in the island.

“CXC Registrar Catherine Daniel noted that the student with the most one is not necessarily the top performer in the island”.
Help me out there somebody, am I missing something?
    what does she mean?

Once again, I think it is just how things are worded here on DNO. Ms Daniels simply means that the island scholar is not necessarily the person with the most ones. Within each subject are different break downs. You and i can get 5 ones each but within your 5 ones you got B’s for use of knowledge where as I only got As. My ones then would be weighted above yours.

Congratulations to all on a job well done. But what about the other schools like Wesley High School, St Martin’s Secondary, Isaiah Thomas are the children not receiving the same just instruction? Do we pay attention to all the other students who were not able to make it / What is going to happen to them ? Will they just fall by the way-side and be considered as the “Lost Generation” . Please let us pay attention to these other schools . What about visits to these institutions to assess what is going on?

Congratulations to all of you. That;s the reward for hard work SATISFACTION!
But i got freaked out as i was reading when i reached to the second top student i noted her parent named was mentioned, Is it that the top student has no parents? or their standard are less than………..? If that;s the case then help elevate him. In concluding my reading i also paid attention to the Registrar;s statement. We therefore would need a lecture on this

Congratulation to Devon Brewster of the PSS we are proud of your great accomplishments 9 one’s 2 two’s, four of which you did on your own without any classroom teaching of which you got 4 ones. You have proven yourself good luck in your endeavors.

Congrats Al and all the other top performers and school. CHS has done remarkable well also. It shows that overally our students are performing better and getting good grades. 13 subjects coupled with sports require strong discipline. That’s the key success. Hard work, be disciplined and dedicate and always include some extra curricular sporting activities. Mens Sana encopore Sano “A strong mind in a Healthy body”.

just curious, is the CSEC EXAMS camparable with the GCE O’LEVELS AND A’LEVELS. It was never so back in those days with all these ones and twos. not that i am belittling the csec exams and the students’ performances, but it just bewilders me today. maybe, the white man knew nothing of the caribbean and our culture and just set any type of exams that came to his english mind. that is why we were not as brilliant as these kids today. Of course, they now have access to the internet and the television and computers, that we did not have access to. we ourselves sat these exams in the dark days.

My congratulations to the top performers and all the other students who not only performed well but also had the opportunity to sit the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination.
Credence must also be given to the Ministry of Education Personnel, schools, teachers, parents and others who continue to make the required sacrifices to lay the foundation for our future generations of responsible citizens.
We must also be aware of and continued to recognize the international reputation and professional operations of CXC and the work of the cadre of CXC professional educators in Dominica and the region.
Yes, Dominica and some other countries in the region were skeptical when CARICOM Ministers mandated the establishment of CXC more than 30 years ago. More recently the same CARICOM has mandate CXC to establish and operate Examinations, Assessments and Certifications to cater for not only our top performers in the region (to include Dominica) but for all levels and capacities in the public and private sectors. These are relevant initiatives with the vision to promote and realized the legislative decision for free movement of skilled and professional people in the region.
Yes, the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE) is already well established by CXC, recognized internationally and in operation in all CARICOM countries except Dominica (baring the efforts of Leeds Institution). The excellent CAPE performance of Miss Shillingford (among others) from Dominica, enrolled at the Barbados Community College showed us that our top CXC students can attain top regional scholarships.
Similarly, the Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ) is well established with the efforts of CXC, CANTA and individual countries, and is in operation in the majority of even our OECS Countries, Every year we celebrate the excellent performances of City and Guilds candidates from Dominica. Vocational trainees at our institutions and employees in the public and private sectors must also experience the mastery of CVQ competences.
We in Dominica must therefore continue to clamor and demand that our top CSEC performers and the vocationally oriented and inclined graduates of our secondary schools this year and years to come, be given opportunities other than CSEC, to be regionally assessed and to benefit from the experiences that are on the doorsteps of our Caribbean countries.
As we continue to say “Congratulations” let us not fail to play our part since the future of our young generations are also in our hands.

Congratulations to all the top achievers, especially this young man! No prejudice, but it feels good to see young men excelling in academics again. With the trend our young men have been taking over the years, I hope that is an indication of a turn around (if I recall- it was a young man again last year). Even the spelling B. Every bit of time is worth spending to get a good education! For without it, I don’t think I would have done much good. Keep focus male and female alike-make the best use of time- study study study, and then you can enjoy the things in life.

Again, DNO, JUST LIKE LAST YEAR it may be safer to say that Mr. Parillon is among the top performers and to state his grades.

He will only be named top performer when CXC confirms that he is, based on individual profiles. Another student obtaining nine ones, for example, could be named TOP student.

In all likelihood, Mr. Parillon IS probably the top student but until that is verified then it is jumping the gun to say that he is.

i am at a loss here…..y would a student who gets 11 ones not be island scholar and one who get 9 ones could…….what is the criteria for being island scholar……please help

      • Anonymous
        August 15, 2014

Maybe because some students who get 11 ones did a whole set of weak subject like EDPM. social studies, PE, etc and some students could get 8 or nine ones is core subjects like physics, math English chem bio, geo etc? I would rather reward those with more core subjects higher.

      • Help is here
        August 15, 2014

The top performer is the one with the most distinctions. i.e. All A’s per subject. In this case one of the students here with 9 ones has 9 distinctions.

      • CHS alumnus
        August 15, 2014

The top performer at CSEC is not just based on number of grades, but on the profile grades as well; for example, someone who has only As in their profile has a better grade one than someone who has a combination of As and Bs. So, if someone with nine grade ones has better profile grades than someone with eleven grade ones, that person may be named top performer.
Also, ‘island scholar’ refers to A level, not CSEC.

      • blackwoman
        August 16, 2014

Because it is based on the quality of the 1 the student receives…for example if i get my eleven 11’s because i get two A’s and a B for each and another student gets ten 1’s by getting three A’s then they have gotten better ones than i have.

      • sherlock holmes
        August 17, 2014

maybe it is because he did 13 subjects and got 11 ones and not 13.

maybe the person who got 9 ones did only 9 subjects and got ALL in ones…

so it might not be the number of subjects you do, but the highest grade achieve in them….. IAJS
