St. Martin Secondary School holds ‘Learning in Action’ Open Day

The St Martin Secondary School opened its doors to the public with an Open Day, dubbed ‘Learning in Action’ which began yesterday and lasted today from 9 a.m-3 p.m.

One of the coordinators of the event, French teacher Jacelyn Labadie, said the aim was to show off some of the various disciplines that students are involved in.

“The entire exhibition, ‘Learning in Action’, has six categories that included Visual Arts, Home Economy, Social Interaction, School History and a Talent Show. Under each of these categories, students presented different aspects of their work in different ways,” Labadie said.

Sections of the exhibit included paintings and drawings, model houses, an archive of historic items relating to the school and food prepared by the students.

I did f&n and business and very happy today although im not persuing a career in any today both has helped me tremendously f&n has helped me in the home and business has help me become a successful graphic designer today, i know of chefs that make more money than doctors furthermore before you get registered i can remember it like its yesterday the parent and child sit down with the prinical and vp and discuss subjects and u get to do it again at the end of 2nd form if thats not what youd like to do you always transfer to our sister school the convent high school, there r 2 catholic schools and they couldnt do the same subjects as they needed a reason for another catholic school there aim was for them to be different and it was i got a scholarship and i chose to attend that school, i loved clothing and textile, gave me my creativity in design today , make beds were fun and although u may say it useless its not it taught me well , how to keep my home and family together, enough of the ignorance on here and big up to smss the most disciplined school in Dominica, i always make time to visit my school and love the talent the kids display, i see we still doing good 2 thumbs up

@out of state and uncharming………

So every student of smss will have the opportunity to go USA or overs like you? When people like you talk its usually about me, me , me and not other people. Think about that for a second. If they stuck you in one of their classrooms to do food and nutrition and make bed what would you know about becoming a civil engineer without having that out side opportunity? Many of those girls there do have discipline and talent. Thats my point. But many of them, few, have opportunities like you or my cousin to go away and have the best opportunities. You like most in Dominica read comments and take things personally without looking at the intended intention of post like mines.

IT IS A WASTE OF TIME TO TEACH THESE GIRLS HOW TO MAKE BED AND COOK!

@ Black..i partially agree with u. i went to SMSS and i wasnt too pleased with the fact that at CXC level i only had 7 subjects. i think some more subjects shld be introduced. at 3rd form i was supposed to choose either business or accounts. i found that ridiculous because i was not introduced to any of the subjects prior to 3rd form and was confused. i ended up choosing accounts because i loved maths and ended up regretting n even dropping it at CXC, n right now i have no business subject credential.

@ charmed i got ur point but not every one is as fortunate or lucky as u. the others need choices and at 11 n 12 yrs, how many kids no exactly what they want to become in life.

overall im not being biased but st martins school is one of the most disciplined school there is on the island. to mrs christian and sister lucy, and the rest of the staff, keep doing a good job

Hats off to all those involved and to the media who help to share such positive events. As a spectator of the performing arts segment. Bravo to other stakeholders who showed their support, particularly the Hon Minister for Education, president of NYC Delroy Williams and outstanding mc Miguel Labadie. The youth need this kind of support.

I would like to commend the staff of smss for the initiative they have taken to promote and highlight the youth of the school. Smss has a wealth of talent outside of the socially praised academics. The budding artists, chefs, designers, singers and performing artists. I was however disappointed in the lack of support give by parents and the public. It times like this we need to see the parents and the public to give the much needed encouragement our youth needs.

they need to teach these girls biology chemistry food and nutrition in that school. Home economics should be a side skill taughtand not part of the main curriculum…. what a shame!

is people like you that can’t go forward in life, i went to SMSS and today i work in a bank there are those who are achieving other goals .

so tell me what is your point . chemistry is not all all schools do that alreday why can’t they do other subjects like the eones they have now. the children have a choice to chhose what schools they want to attend depending on what their carrers are ok…

my point is of course smss have talent and thats why these young women need to be exposed to so much more. Someone said that maybe they can’t handle physics etc but I beg to differ. My cousin one of few from that school to have the opportunity to move to the states is mechanical engineer and she attended smss. She didn’t gain anything from that school and if it wasn’t for her mother she would have been labelled a reject! Most of these girls talents haven’t yet been explored prior to high school and thats why I said they need more variety for these girls to use their full potential. The principal has been there for years and she is doing nothing to introduce new subjects into the schoool because like many others they think thats all those girls are capable of. Another of my acqaintance went to smss and she is successful today in buisness and they stuck her in the 1-2, 2-2, 3-2 etc to home economics. They didn’t at the time allowed her to do buisness. Now she showing them though working in a top consulting firm. She still can’t cook or make bed but she can make money. I still say shame!!!!!!!!
