The 4H Clubs of the Saint Mary’s Primary School and the Saint Mary’s Academy will be highlighting environmental cleanliness when they observe Green Day, on Friday, January 29, under the theme “Keeping Our Environment Green and Clean.”
The activity is to begin at 7:45 at the Saint Mary’s Academy.
Bert Paul, 4H Coordinator for the St. Mary’s Primary and Academy said the movement was adopted five years ago on a trip to Jamaica and the event is celebrated each year on “the last Friday in the month of January.”
“Five years ago, we took the top 4-Hers for the year in Dominica in all primary and secondary schools to Jamaica, to a Caribbean Agricultural Food Festival in Jamaica and that was the area where they started the Green Day celebration in Jamaica and I took it over to Dominica,” he said. “We adopted it as a school, at St. Mary’s Primary and Academy. So, every year, the last Friday in January, we celebrate this activity in Dominica.”
On Green Day, the students will wear green t-shirts and decorate the school accordingly. Guest speakers, promoting the importance of a healthy environment, will also be featured at the school.
“So every year, we promote a healthy environment, to keep the environment green and clean and the students wear green t-shirts on that day to celebrate this activity. We also decorate the school building with a lot of green fabric and balloons,” Paul stated. “And, we have someone in the health area coming in to speak to the students about the importance of eating healthy and keeping the environment green and clean.”
An exhibition, which features the gardening skills of students, will also form part of the day.
“Sometimes we having a small exhibition of what the children grew, to show that we should all eat healthy, so this year we have sweet peppers and okra which will be on display and our garden tools that we used to plant these things,” Paul noted.

Excellent work by a persistent scholar, Mr Bert Paul.
Good job bro!! Keep up the good work. The awareness is very important. Sometimes people don\’t realize that what we take for granted can be easily taken away. Like the Nature island for example
