A project to construct storm drains to protect lives and property is being undertaken in Bagatelle.
A Disaster Mitigation Project, it will be conducted under Japan’s ‘Grass-roots Human Security Project (GGP)’ in collaboration with the Dominica Association of Local Community Authorities (DALCA) and funded by the GEF Small Grants Program to the tune of some US$85,513.80 or close to EC$ 230,000
“Projects like this is very welcomed by the office of disaster management simple because it protects life, it protects property and it adds to sustainability for production,” Disaster Coordinator, Don Coriette, said during a ceremony recently held at Bagatelle.
Students from the Campbell Primary School were also given an opportunity to visit the project site.
“So we are very happy to be amongst not only the pioneers of the project, but the youth that will see similar type projects being implemented, not only around your community but around your school, because Climate Change is real,” Coriette stated.
He revealed that the island will experience, “more intense rainfall, more intense hurricanes and therefore we have to prepare more intensely.”
“We cannot take it for granted anymore and there for you need to play you part at school and also at home,” he noted.
Coriette advised the students to ensure that their teachers and principal has a disaster plan, “for your school, at your home.”
The drain is about 3,000 feet long, four feet deep and three feet wide and is covering almost half of the village in the areas most prone to landslides.
I do think some other countries should do the same. When there is a downfall of rain, roads, streets and homes and other building basements are flooded in a worst manner. These are the bigger countries. I wonder if you are aware of that.
So tell me , why do dominica people build this deep drains? And when they do why don’t they cover it ? What for them to copy infrom other countries they don’t
