Communities along Dominica’s east coast say they have been doing their bit to help in the fight against the use of illegal substances.
Schools in the area held an anti-drug march earlier this week, in observance of Drug Awareness Month.
The march, held in the community of Sinekou in the Kalinago Territory, was done in collaboration with the Youth Officer with responsibility for the eastern district.
The activity started at the Sinekou Resource Centre and featured students, teachers and staff of the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit displaying anti-drug placards as they marched in support of the anti-drug ideal.
Those who addressed participants of the march included Garnet Joseph – Carib Chief, Joseph Brodwill- Peace Corps Volunteer at the East Dominica Children’s Federation, Corporal Thomas Coipel of the Salybia Police Station and Jacinta Bannis Director of the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit.
Julia Cyrille of the Atkinson Primary School read a poem highlighting the dangers of drug use.
Participating schools were the San Sauveur, Castle Bruce, Sinekou, Salybia and Atkinson Primary schools.
The Sinekou Pre-school was also in attendance.

This is the initiative that we need in Dominica in order to stop the drug abuse issues of our youth. Thank you to everyone who was involved with this process.

The future in the East is very bright. Way to go kids.
while im all for anti drug activities i never saw the use of marches…sitting down and really educating people on the effects of drugs would work better
With all due respect, any type of drug awareness opportunities in our communities is positive for all parties. Hopefully this same group of community leaders will continue their fight against drug abuse with other activities.
Great work by the National Drug Abuse prevention Unit and all others involved.

Dominicans and DNO please stop referring to the peoples as caribs. Thanks
A good initiative. They should also be taught to report or expose anyone that tries to push drugs on them or any of their friends. This will ensure that the majority of youngsters will grow up shun drug taking and the culture surrounding it.
I’m proud of all your work in keeping good messages in the minds of the children!! Great job everyone, especially Joseph Bridwell!
