Students receive scholarships from DFA

The recipients pose with DFA officials

Youth Development Officer at the Dominica Football Association (DFA) Joffre Faustin has called on recipients of DFA Scholarships to take advantage of what is being offered and embrace the opportunity that so many wish they had.

Earlier this week the DFA offered full scholarships and partial scholarships to a number of football students. The full scholarships are worth $2,000, while the partial ones are worth $500.

“You are indeed special. Bear this in mind It will take hard work, commitment, sacrifice but most of all it will take discipline and good attitude to achieve your goal. Stay focused, stay away from activities that that will land you in trouble and listen to your parents, they care about you,” Faustin said.

He also called on the parents to play their roles in the development of their children.

“To the parents, I call on you to continue caring for your children, provide the environment and the support necessary for them to learn and flourish. The responsibility is yours in shaping and molding the young ones…the ball is in your court,” Faustin said.

In order to be eligible for the scholarships, applicants had to play in either the Under-15 or the Under-17 leagues or the Secondary School Girls League organized under the auspices of the DFA. In effect, it means that all applicants would have already been attending one of the high schools on the island. In addition, their performance during the last school year was a determining factor.

President of the DFA, Glen Etienne explained that the three full scholarships were at a tune of $2,000 each.

“Also, three other students who were not eligible for the awarding of a DFA scholarship, but who applied will receive a contribution of $500. In the case of the full scholarship awardees, this support will continue for the rest of the student’s stay at high school,” he said.

He warned that the continuation of such support will largely depend on the students’ academic success.

“This means that the students must maintain a decent performance at the end of each year. Those receiving these scholarships will not be given the continued assistance if their performance is below par,” he noted. “The scholarships will cover the cost of text books, uniforms, transportation, school fees and stationary. With no fear of contradiction, I can say that these scholarships are the most attractive on the island right now for high school students.”

Etienne had words of encouragement for the recipients.

“To the recipients, you have been given an opportunity so make the best use of it. Do all within your powers to ensure that you succeed at school. Always follow those who can give you positive advice and those who want to see you succeed and those who ‘have your back’ so to speak. Be aware of those who want to lead you down the wrong path and stay clear of all illicit activities. Always remember that you are on a mission to succeed and achieve. Never lose sight of the goals that you have set for yourselves both on and off the field of play. Manage your time properly and see to it that your football and your academic pursuits are given the adequate attention.”

Etienne told the recipients the DFA “is ready and willing to support you as you pursue your dreams”.

“You have been doing well on the football field, now go out there and do even better in the classroom. Always remember that football is an avenue which can open many doors. Remain humble but assertive. Be a leader and not a follower. At present, there are six young footballers studying at colleges and universities in America. They have reached this far because of the football and academic ability. You can do it too. You can emulate them.” He stated.

He urged parents to take up the responsibility of ensuring that their children succeed.

“You need to provide all the emotional and physical support that they will require during this vulnerable period in their lives. Help them to remain focused on what is important. Help them to manage their time effectively so that both their academics and exploits on the field can flourish,” he stated.

Just two weeks ago the Dominica Football Association partnered with the Free Kick Foundation, a charitable organization based in the United States and successfully ran a two-day invitational football competition at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium for boys under the age of nineteen. Coming out of this event it is hoped that students will be identified to pursue studies in colleges and universities in the United States.

Those who received full scholarships are Marcus Bredas, Audel Laville and Quinton Moise while Stephan Pascal, Donte Augustine and Adriel Lawrence received partial scholarships.

Why does it need to clarify that one of the boys parents weren’t there?

Parents have responsibility yes, and are doing their best, but the parents might have had to contribute to the countries economy by working that day. The parents enabled best practices and prided themselves on raising great students and the success is obviously shown here. 8-O

The student is well deserving of the award. This statement on the editors part and was unnecessary and not called for. :-|
