Ten Dominicans to pursue studies in the People’s Republic of China

Some of the students

Ten Dominican youths leave the island this week for the People’s Republic of China.

The students are all recipients of the 2011 scholarship programme and for the next few years will pursue studies in a variety of fields.

Last week, the students attended a ceremony at the Chinese Embassy which was attended by China’s Ambassador to Dominica, Wang Zonglai, His Excellency the President of Dominica, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, Hon Minister for Education and Human Resource Development Petter Saint Jean and Hon Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Kelver Darroux.

“The eight universities that you are going to study in soon are located in eight major cities of China, seven of which are provincial capitals. There is a beautiful interior city in the central part of China. All of them are frontiers of China’s economy and academic development,” he said.

Hon Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean, reminded the students of their roles as ambassadors to their country while in the People’s Republic of China.

“You go out as ambassadors of this beloved country in a land, that for many of you, you have heard of or read only on television and in books. But we are counting on you, as our ambassadors, to set the pace for future students who will follow your trail,” he stated.

Hon Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Kelver Darroux, had sound words of advice for the scholarship recipients.

“In addition to the academic and intellectual benefits, you will also be beneficiaries of a wonderful cultural exchange as a result of being bilingual in the future and sharing your respective cultural attributes with your host. You will be a great distance away, but I urge you to never forget Dominica and the purpose for which you are there. That is why, students, I urge you to be disciplined. Never forget your purpose for going to China. When you have to be at class make sure that you are in class. When you have to be studying in China, make sure that you are studying. I know that you are relatively young people and the opportunities are out there, may attractions, but the onus is on you to remain focused on your goals as individuals and also as a collective to ensure that at the end of your tenure, you have achieved what you had set your mind to previously set out to achieve because your education depends on you,” he said.

    Dear Students

Your government has gone out and secured these scholarships and you are the beneficiaries this year. Please do your best and represent Dominica well. This is a privilege which very few Dominican parents would be able to pay for and it is free to you: do well!

Those young people have got an opportunity to enhance their life chances and economic well being in the future and as far as I am concerned, this augers well for Dominica.
    Congratulation to you young people.

Education all the way for DA’s development

Great. What we lack in Dominica severely is knowledge of the world around us; leaving our homes is the way the lucky ones grow. If we can leave, if but for a time, we should. Staying in one place forever will likely teach us little, and those who are afraid that Dominicans will not come back after going abroad–well, why must they? It’s ideal if you come back to help us develop, but there is no reason for us to stay anywhere; we forge our own futures, and let no zealot tell you otherwise.

These students are some of our greatest hopes.

Congrats to all of you scholarship recipients. Please make the best of it. I have a little extra admiration for people that can learn a new language while pursuing studies in that language. Learning Mandarin puts you in a very good strategic position since China one of the upcoming superpower – you makes you very marketable on the international job market. Now go ahead and work you butts off because education is the KEY to many opportunities in life.

It’s good to hear that our young people get an opportunity to attend University. However, persons should not be given opportunities simply because they support any political party as is the trend today. We are all Dominican’s and therefore supporting a particular colour should not be the number one criteria for one to obtain a scholarship. It would be very interesting to conduct a survey to see how many of our young persons that went to study in China and had to run back to Dominica because they could not adapt to the lifestyle. I have spoken to a few of them and some things definitely need to be made clear to those students before they leave DA.

Y everything has to be so negative? No matter how positive the news article may be some people just have to put in there negativity..

Let me congratulate the students. I wish them all the best in China.. I pray that they will be successful in their studies and that the Lord will guide them and protect them..
At the end of the day we are all Dominicans, it doesn’t matter what village they are from, whether they are labourites or UWP.. This pettiness needs to stop..Too much negativity..Everything has to be about politics..
To all the NEGATIVE PEOPLE out dere, get rid of that negative energy. take a deep breath and think positive and then positive things will start happening in yall lives..ANd trust me u yall will feel more relieved and happier..

Can some of you just be happy for these kids who are getting an opportunity at higher education?

Education is the best tHing anyone can have or get access to, so no matter where they go to get educated, it will be to their benefit.

Thank God that China is providing these scholarships because it could mean that some of these folks would otherwise not have received the chance at higher learning.

Congrats to you guys. I personally do not care whether you are LABOUR, Freedom, or UWP. All I care is that you have an opportunity to make your future better.

All I ask is that you all “Cape Diem” you have your future in your hands now…run with this opportunity that many do not get – HIGHER EDUCATION

    GOD BLESS

Why do they have to hold a ceremony for giving a few scholarships and why Liver-poul and Petter has to be featured? So every event there has to be a hoopla, waste of time and money.
I guess the politition has to stoop the people’s level so they can be seen as doing something. :?:

That’s great – at the end of the day the education is what matters. But I have noticed that most of the top Chinese student end up at schools in Europe and the US. Maybe we should ask the Chinese Gov’t to provide the funds for our students to study in Europe and the US as well. Afterall it is education and I feel most of the parents would be happier to have theirs sons and daughters in a more culturally integrated society. I know in the past the Canadian gov’t and other gov’t would provide funding to the Gov’t of Dominica that could use to support University students.
