Sagicor Insurance Dominica, as part of their commitment to assisting students to excel, awarded transition scholarships to ten students on Friday 9 September 2016.
The scholarships were donated to five students who are transitioning to secondary school and five transitioning to the Dominica State College this academic year.
General agent for Sagicor, Cheryl Rolle, who also personally awarded one scholarship, presented the donation to the students.
The scholarships are worth was five hundred dollars for secondary school and one thousand dollars each for college.
“It is to encourage and to help the children to transition from the primary school to high school and from high school to college,” Rolle explained to the media.
“We got a lot of applications from policy holders but we chose them on merit and location as well, so that we tried to get a cross section; so we have one child from Portsmouth, one from north east, Kalinago Territory, St Joseph, Wotten Waven and so on,” she continued.
The scholarships were also awarded based on merit and as such the students’ grades were assessed in addition to the essay that they were to submit along with the application forms.
While this scholarship program is new, Rolle said it complements the company’s Sagicor Visionaries Challenge which invites secondary school students to identify a challenge facing their school or community, using Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, referred to as the STEM subjects, to develop effective, innovative and sustainable solutions to address the issue identified.
Sagicor also awards scholarships for students to the University of the West Indies (UWI).
“We have a Dominican young lady who just graduated – Miss Ophar – she graduated from the University of the West Indies, thanks to Sagicor, so its continuity,” Rolle indicated.
Cornelius Royer of Capuchin, parent of Alisha Royer, one of the recipients of the scholarships said his family is “very grateful and thankful” to Sagicor for the assistance.
“I know it is greatly needed and it will be usefully used in the reason, or in light of her education,” Royer promised.
“She has shown interest in terms of pursing her studies and continuing to be very keen in terms of what she does at school, I know that she is very excited about it so …is her mom and myself and we can assure you that we will give good results and she has also assured us that she will give us good results,” Royer informed.
wonderful news. Keep up the good work Sagicor
But it is not fear when a child already receive a scholarship to obtain another. The parents should know better. Another child could have well obtain this one. Stups

Thank you Sagicor! I know it’s a great help. Where I am located, the only thing we get from these companies are bills- none of them give back.
